My name is Kayla, and I'm new here. I'm 19 years old, and I was diagnosed with endo when I was 14. I've had 2 laparoscopys and 1 laproscopic excision of endometriosis, including lupron, birth control pills, and a special diet. The pain is worse now that I've got off the lupron. It made me crazy and gain all sorts of weight. The doctors on base (I'm in the military) said that now my only options are either having a kid or a hysterectomy, or I could try another laparoscopy. Any advice? I'm leaning towards the hysterectomy, although I understand that it's not guaranteed to fully get rid of the disease. Thanks for any help.

Hi, Kayla. Welcome to the forum. I've heard it is very common in the military to recommend hysterectomy. One of the ladies on here whose husband is in the military wound up having a hysterectomy because that was the only option that was given to her! Unfortunately, having a baby to cure endo is a big MYTH! You can see that in action here, by all of the women who have kids and...still have endo. I would actually like to kick any doctor who would perform a hysterectomy on a 19-year-old.
I think you should probably find another doctor who specializes in endo, off base if necessary. If you don't have any other insurance than Tri-Care (Military insurance), some places will do the surgeries/treatments at little or no costs to you.
Best of luck. Keep us posted. ~Ouchy

Thanks for the reply! I definitely didn't want to go the kids route. I'm too young for that, and I'm not married. I saw Dr. Redwine in Oregon (my home state) before I enlisted, and he did my excision. I'm trying to find a specialist around here, but with no luck. I will definitely keep you updated!

Kayla--Dr. Redwine did your excision!!! You are now a goddess around here. There are so many of us who want to go to him for excision!!! However, I guess the excision wasn't all that good if you are back to this point in all of only two years...? Can you post somewhere about your surgery w/ Dr. Redwine?

Hi, shona. Unfortunately, that is a decision you, yourself, will have to make with your doctor. If you do decide to go with hysterectomy, you will have to consider possibilities of osteoporosis, loss of libido and lubrication, hormone replacement, among other things.
My advice actually would be to try changing your diet if you haven't already. A serious change, I mean. I am also a fan of natural therapies. The decision is ultimately up to you! Also, remember not to let a doctor talk you in to anything.

Wait. You have been formally diagnosed w/ endo, right? If not, I would definitely say that a hysterectomy would be unethical, as it would not even be known what you have.
