Has total hysterectomy helped anyone? I was told adhesions have wrapped around my bowels and other female organs, I had an large vertical abdominal incision for an appendectomy with complications 30 years ago, 7 years later I had to have corrective surgery, had severe abdominal pain during sex, began with only a laparoscope, but once inside found uterus turned self inside out (yes this is the truth, docs never believe that part) bladder was upside down, tubes & ovaries filled with cysts, I have had trouble all my adult life with female organs, 8 years ago had a laparoscope to remove severe adhesions, periods have gotten extremely painful over last year, 12 weeks ago, I was urinating & had the worse pain ever covering this scar (twice cut) and a severe tugging, pulling burning feeling on my belly button (inside) and a pressure type feeling on my abdominal wall, has any one felt this before? OBGYN said I now have endometriosis as well, but a surgeon must remove the adhesions she says because after reading all past medical records she said adhesions wrapped around bowels & she feels that's what is causing tugging feeling, also my uterus is adhered to the abdominal wall, not in correct position, so she (OBGYN) doesn't even want to attempt to begin to touch that type of surgery, (which I have also read a good OBGYN will refer you to a surgeon instead of attempting that surgery)I requested laparoscope assisted hysterectomy, or at least a horizontal scar instead which won't hurt as much, she said no on all accounts due to the adhesion bowl wrapped issue, I have read many post on many complications with the bowels & bladder & returning adhesions post hysterectomy (which I can't have vaginally because I have never been able to have kids because of all these female problems) I am now in a panic and scared to death, can someone please help me and offer me some security or at least some suggestions, or at least let me know if you had less problems & felt better after a total hysterectomy, or got more adhesions? I am very traumatized by all I have read and I need help, can I refuse, or will it just complicate matters if I suggest only adhesion removal, is a hysterectomy necessary with my mess inside my body? Will it help or will it make things worse? Someone please help me I am scared to death
Please help

I don't mean to impose as I haven't had a hysterectomy but thought I could offer some support. I'm thinking that with being such a major op, you will take a really long time to heal. My last lap in May 09 had me in agony sometimes after, and convinced that it had been a useless op. But for whatever reason I had pain that echoed my pre-op pain, and these pains eventually faded as I healed. It took so so long for me to feel better and to eventually see the benefits of the surgery, upwards of 6 months for sure. I know it's 3 months since but just give yourself a little time and concentrate on healing, in the meantime ask your doc exactly what seen and dealt with to give you peace of mind.

I had a partial hyster in October of 09. Give yourself time you just had a major surgery and my docs told me a year out you can still have issues. I am still having problems and pain and I had the robotic surgery. I am sure with time you will feel better. Like Cherry said talk to your doc about how you are feeling. Did you have ENDO on other places besides your ovaries and uterus? If so the pain will still give you problems if you have it on bowels and bladder. I still have ENDO even tho I do not have a uterus.

Hi girls, I haven't been on in awhile but I wanted to say HI. I had my hysterectomy on April 29, 2010. I felt great for awhile, they end up doing a bowel resection and a total hysterectomy, now I don't know what's going on. I am back to the old pains in my side as well as the whole peeing 50 times a day. Is it really possible that this could happen. I was feeling sooooo good. I can't believe this is happening. I haven't told anyone yet because I don't know if I believe it myself. Can someone give me some advice please. My doc thought for sure I was going to be OK.

Aww, so sorry! Just curious what did your doc says about your condition now? Does he know Peeing 50 times a day -I was like that a day after my laproscopy, i don't know if its related, but they applied xylocaine jelly on my urethra and it was an instant relief and it never returned. In my case my urthera got sensitive cuz of the catheter inserted.

Hello ladies! I am new to the message boards. cjlevett.proboards.com/index.cgi?board=introductions&action=display&thread=4123 <<<this is the link to my "intro story". I wanted to jump on this thread as I will be having a TAH with removal of ovaries in Oct. Just waiting for my insurance to kick in. I have read every entry on this thread and it has been very informative. I am doing as much research as possible and getting the experiences of other women is so helpful. I was wondering if we could try something...for those who are interested (not trying to pry) I would like to know 2 things: 1) How many years did you struggle with ENDO? 2) How old were you when you and your doc decided on Hysto? If you are willing to share I would appreciate it. Thank you all for sharing your stories. Hope all of you who underwent surgery recently are recovering well and feeling pain free!!

I am only a few days from my one year hysterversary for those cruising this thread I wanted to give a quick look back. Remember this is only my personal experience and it is different for everyone!! Obviously some people get total relief because they get their hyster and then we never hear from them again, which is awesome! So here it is, the good and the bad side of my hysterectomy experience: [glow=red,2,300]GOOD[/glow]: LOVE, LOVE, LOVE not having periods. Can not stress that enough!!!! no more bleeding to death for ten days at a time. Can't blame bad behavior on hormones, don't have any. LOL I can have sex anytime since we never worry about any birth control and I'm not bleeding all the time. I can laugh at others PMS cause I dont' have any!! BWHAHAHAHa I have more energy now too (probably related to not being anemic from the constant blood loss!) Did I mention I love having sex all the time because I can? ;D When I get nervous I have horrible hot flashes,/sweats but It works in my favor cause when I work out it makes me look like I'm really putting out the effort! [glow=red,2,300]BAD[/glow]: Sex sometimes doesn't go as good, I didnt' have this problem before. The brain is willing but the 'parts' don't always cooperate. I'm hoping its partially psychosomatic and I will figure it out eventually. sex is now sometimes painful as the vaginal vault is still pretty tender, NO deep thrusts! I didn't have this problem before either so a little iritating, I am hoping for further healing though! Scars can take a while to loose their sensitivity. bladder problems have increased (bladder Endo) bowel problems are the same, not worse or better (bowel endo) Some sleep issues but they may not be related to menopause but all the anesthesia? I have gone under way to many times and I have heard others who have had many surgeries say that their sleep was also affected. Pain in the upper abdomen has been increasing steadily but that may be related to the stomach, we haven't figured it out yet. Maybe also still be more endo. So there it is in a nut shell. (disclaimer included, that its not the same for everyone) Hoping that was helpful for this hyster thread and the many looking at this surgery??? I do have to remind myself sometimes that even with the pain I still have its sooooooooooooooo much better now. So this is also helpful for me celebrating my one year hysterversary and how far I have come!

Amber84 I am 34 and am coming up on my year anniversary my hysterectomy October 21st. I had Endo according to my specialist my entire life his research shows we are born with it. I was diagnosed tho Feb of 09 I think. My sypmtoms were apparent since I was teenager and go worse when I turned 30 I had years of issues before getting to the ENDO diaganosis. My situation was a partial hysterectomy and had I not had my uterus removed I would of had major issues with the amount of blood I was losing I was experienced many health problems. It was very necessary for me and I went to a variety of doctors before I did it and did so much research. I did as much as I could to save my uterus. I still have endo on my bowels and bladder and will continue to have it. I have choose to use diet and alternative ways to keep my endo under control or atleast when I can control it. The disease has a mind of its own as I am sure you know. If you would like to personal message me you can any time. Good Luck with whatever you decide. You will find alot of support on here so ask as many questions as you want we are here to answer them as best we can.

I read your intro after posting this and noticed you are a stage 4 I also was a stage 4 when my doctor removed my uterus he found endo on and inside of it. Now I had no idea it was inside until after the pathalogy report came back. My surgery was necessary and had I went another route with excision as I was planning at one point it would not of made a difference for the inside endo this is actually called Adenomyosis. I just wanted to add that so you know it was a very high stage of endo and a difficult decision but one I am glad I made. All the pro's and con's of a hysterectomy can throw woman off what matters is that you are healthy and decide knowing that you researched every other way with your doctor.

Thanks so much for your response KSA! I do agree with the research that we are born with Endo....hahah sounds funny...not like I am a scientist or anything but it seems logical. My mom has it just not as severely as me. I am very sorry you suffered for so long. There is still so much ignorance even in the medical community about this disease. What a coincidence we both had our laps in Feb of '09!
I realize hysto is not a cure but at this point I think it is necessary. I have tried everything and I want my life back. I am young and that is what freaks everyone out. You were 33...that is young to have to go through hysto as well. I wish I would have been able to conceive but the Endo has so badly damaged my anatomy that it is impossible. I have been adjusting to this for about 3 years now and I know if will always be a delicate subject for me. My doc is believes that I also have Adenomyosis. The plan now is I will have a large vertical abdominal incision so she can have access to....well everything. I will have ovaries removed and I will not go on any hormone for at least 6 months to hopefully "starve" the Endo. At this point I am willing to accept the risks and what life will be like post-hysto.
Can I ask...did you keep your ovaries?? If not...did you take hormone after surgery?? Just interested to hear from someone who has experienced all this.

I had to have my ovaries out as they were a mess, just full of endo. There really wasnt an option to keep them. I have lots of info on HRT's and life without them in the post menopause section. I really like not taking the HRT's and the hot sweats are managable (which is about the only bad thing I've had with menopause). I love not having the mood swings of PMS without the ovaries too (and without HRT's) of course this is another "you have to make up your own mind" My doctor wants me to take them eventually but I told him no thank you.
