Anyone else take Prometrium? It's supposed to be a natural form of Progesterone, therefore less side affects than something like Aygestin (Norethindrone). I had terrible headaches on Aygestin which I tried earlier this year after I had uncontrolled bleeding for months after a lap. I now have severe bleeding and clotting after my IUD was removed. so my doc has prescribed Prometrium. The weird thing is it, from what I have read it can be used to treat people who are not having a period OR used in people with heavy bleeding. That just doesn't make sense to me! How can it bring on a period and/or slow down a heavy period?

I have taken Prometrium orally and vaginally. I took it oraly to help my chances in conceving before I went of fertility treatment. I was on it for one month and did not go further with it because I had a bad reaction to it. It put me in the hospital. Some how my endometriosis reacted with it, and when I started my period i was soaking through tampons every 15 min. and had two cysts from the medication. The cyst actually ruptured which is what put me in the Hosp.
After I got pregnant since my hormone levels were real low ,and I have a history of miscasrriage they put me on prometrium, but I had to insert it vaginally. I was on it for the first 8 weeks of my pregnancy and had no symptoms.

I was just prescribed this today. I've been using progesterone cream but my new doc wants me to up my dose of progesterone (bio-identical, so fingers crossed I don't have the reactions I had when on synthetic progestin BC). I've had a good reaction to progesterone cream and feel good when I'm on it so I'm hoping my reaction to this is favorable.
She instructed me to take it until I get my period (should be coming up in the next week or two or three... they're all over the place), then after my period ends, take it for three weeks and then off a week. I may or may not get my period then.
At the end of the third week, she's going to test my hormones to see where they are at and use that as a baseline for future tests.

Well, finished my first cycle of prometrium. Three weeks on, then one week off. I felt great the three weeks on - pain was very minimal. But, the first full day off the cramping started, felt like I was going to get my period. I had the tiniest bit of spotting for 3 days - seriously, could barely tell - but no period. I'm hoping that when I go back on it (started today), the cramping and pain dies down all together again.
I should mention I'm on the smallest does - 100 mg 1x day. I've read reviews of the drug where women were put on much higher doses several times a day and had adverse reactions.
I haven't had a period in over 60+ days, but given the awful one I had last, I'm not complaining too bad. I suspect that it'll have to happen sooner or later, but I'd almost like it to be a bit sooner just so I can see if my cycles will be a bit more regulated on prometrium.
All in all, no real side effects. My hands feel like they fall asleep a bit sooner than usual, and my thunder thighs seem like they've lightened up a bit (strange, I know, but they just feel better!). Other than that, haven't noticed much. Oh, but I have to take it right before bed because it zonks me out.
