"Hi, i decided to go with Mirena IUD , so that i would get lesser periods and that would keep my endo in check. However, the nurse at myOBGYN who regularly does Mirena for other patients could not get it past my cervix because of my retroverted uterus. A couple of years ago, another doctor who did my HSG had the same problem and had to seek the help of a different doctor to get it in- so clearly it seems, some expertise is needed for this.
My doctor wants to give me cytotec to dilate my cervix and get the Mirena in- Should i see a different doctor ? FYI, i went in on cd4 of my period for the Mirena insertion since it was friday evening when i got my period and i could not go in on cd1 or cd2 as is the norm.
I do not want to take the cytotec because i am currently breastfeeding my 9 month old. Should i just switch doctors?
Thanks. "

Hi Navs,
If it's as much of a struggle to fit the Mirena, I'm very surprised that a gyn hasn't done it himself. I feel strongly that you should insist on having it fitted under General Anaesthetic. That way, they can position it much better because you're asleep.
I have a retroverted uterus, too, due to Endo and had a Mirena fitted under GA during a lap and hysteroscopy.

You could have an infection in your uterus but they won't necessarily remove it. I had one and they treated it with antibiotics and all was fine. He didn't remove it as long as it cleared up and wasn't a recurring problem
as for insertion, I have a tilted uterus and a stubborn cervix. It took about 20 mins to get in inserted and properly positioned, yes it hurt, but it was in and over. I wouldn't want general anesthesia to avoid 20mins of pain. Plus general will interfere with your nursing your baby too.

Thank you ladies- I have another question- is it absolutely critical for the mirena insertion to be done on cd1 or 2? I went in on cd4 - could that have impacted my insertion?

Not at all. The first 2 days are just when your cervix is more open and its easier to get it in. I wasn't on my period when they did mine which is why my cervix wasn't cooperating. There is no impact on the actual IUD, just the insertion itself gets harder on days other than cd1 or cd2

OK -- called my dr & she said if the fever goes above 100.4 F then I should call again. Well -- it's been 100 F for 5 days so ? She said -- and I quote -- "Weird sh*t can happen the first few months with Mirena". That made me laugh pretty hard! So -- I'm not as worried! As for insertion -- I had mine inserted when I had my lap about a month ago. I'm not using it for bc -- but to try and reduce the painful cramps and excessive bleeding. So far the cramps are about the same -- but not for as many days -- and I think I might have just had a 3 day period -- what the? If it stays this light -- I am going to be so happy! Now....if the other weird sh*t could just settle itself.....

But -- I also want to add that in this month -- besides the constant spotting (which comes right out with spray-n-wash or the like), I haven't gained weight, gotten migraines, or had my skin break out like when I was on the pill! But -- then again -- it's only been a month!
So far I feel very positive and am going to try to give it the 3 months or so for the "weird sh*t" to settle down!

Posted by karen80222 in another thread ________________________________________ "Well -- over last weekend my cramps got really bad & my period was due so I was like -- oh no - here it comes.....the cramps settled down & my period was gone by Tuesday!!!!! AND -- it was almost like I didn't have one -- I think I might have used a panty liner or light tampon and changed it once a day!!!!! That is totally opposite of the flooding a super tampon every 2 hours -- or less and bleeding for a week on end!!!!
unbelievable -- huh?
Maybe there is hope! "

I'm seriously considering getting one, but I've heard so many horror stories, that I was getting discouraged. I'm going on a 4 week trip this summer to Europe and I'm worried that if I get Mirena put in before I go, I might have problems on my trip, in a foreigh country!!!! Maybe I'll have to postpone and just deal with horrific periods for a while longer. It sounds like Mirena is working for you. You said that in the first month you had some spotting and random cramps. At first I thought that was bad, but then I thought, I have cramps every day anyway, so having the IUD probably wouldn't make that much difference. Anyway, hope to hear more positive feedback from you. Z"

Thanks for redirecting me Ouchy -- I tend to have ADHD! Zuzana -- as for getting one & worrying about your travels -- I just don't know! So far I've been lucky -- but gosh you read on the internet all these people who have all these problems! Even kb here had such a hard time! The spotting got really aggravating to me -- it wasn't enough to wear a tampon & my skin is so sensitive wearing even a pantyliner everyday got irritating -- I know -- tmi! But -- it was really so little I just started wearing nothing & just washed it right out -- no big deal! I'm still laughing at myself for calling my dr to ask her if this was my period! I had read other's experiences where their first period with it was weeks long? ?? But then again -- mine may have lost interest & will come back with a vengeance when I am out in the mountains this weekend! If I don't reappear on the boards -- then just figure it came back, I was unprepared & got eaten by a cougar or something! HA!

karen, I thought your psot was completely fine! I just didn't want subsequent posts to be about the IUD. You did a perfect job. That's why I left your post there (and just copied part of it to here).

Hi Karen, thanks for your reply. My trip's not coming up till the first week of August, so I figure, if I get Mirena at my next period, that'll give me two months to get used to it and find out if I can tolerate it. Hope you have a good trip to the mountains and your period stays away!!!
