I've been through a lap and lupron shot with no relief. The 3-month lupron shot not only made the pain worse but now I got to deal with additional issues such as hot flashes, fatigue and moodiness. Just great! Anyway, my doctor has now suggested trying mirena IUD to help with endo pain, something about prosterone being helpful I guess. My concern with an IUD is that I have mitral valve prolapse (MVP).
After doing some research on the internet I have found basically two opinions. One opinion is just to take prophylatic antibiotics on the day of insertion of the IUD, just like I have to take antibiotics on the day of a dental procedure. But others feel that an IUD is a constant source of possible bacterial infection and is therefore too risky for someone with MVP to have at all.
Is there anyone out there with MVP who is currently using mirena? Or anyone who just has an opinion on combining IUD and MVP? Thanks!

I have the mirena. I got it in January. I do not have MVP or any knowledge of it. I just wanted to say I don't get infections from my IUD. If you are monogamous the increased chance of infection really doesn't apply to you. The IUD does help with my endo because I don't have a period anymore, last one was in Feb. So I dont' have the pain that was associated with that. I still have a few days here and there with endo pain but nothing to bad. My lap and then the IUD which I only got for birth control not for the endo have been life savers.

Hi Holly!! I have also had the IUD since the end of July. I had it insterted during a lap. I do not, however, have MVP (sorry ). I had some problems right after the IUD was interted with spotting and cramping. This went on for about 6 weeks. I had about two weeks that were much better painwise and no bleeding and then just had a period start again two weeks ago. The bleeding has still not yet stopped. The pain during this cycle has been much better though, so I am trying to remain positive. My gyne. nurse practitioner said that some peoples bodies just take longer to adjust. I am going to wait another cycle or so and hopefully I will be as lucky as Janet and have my periods stop altogether (or atleast only be one week~not 2 or 3 or 6!!) If it continues like this though, I may have it removed and go back to the pill. I know how frustrating it is to try and decide what to do to get some relief from the pain. I would suggest asking your doctor about the relationship b/w the Mirena and MVP. I have never read anything that mentioned it not being a good idea but I would let your doc. know just to be safe!! Good luck!! Lindsay

Hello,
I am 33 years old and was diagnosed with endometriosis when I had an 11 pound endometrian tumor removed. I am left with half of one of my ovaries and one fallopian tube in tact. That was 10 years ago. I have 2 childrean (7 and 5 years old). Thank God, conceiving was not a problem.
After both births, my endometriosis seemed to have subsided, until about 2 years ago. Since then, the pain has been increasing. I was having migranes from every form of the pill. I sometimes still get migranes, since I have gone off of the pill, at the end of a period.
Now, I am have irregular bleeding including clots that force me to stay home for 2-3 days of my cycle.
Before I try an endometrial ablation, my new OBGYN recommended I try the Mirena IUD. (I am not totally sure that we won't want anymore children.)
Has anyone tried the Mirena? I woud love to see my periods regular again, lightened flow, and less pain.
Thank you! Amy

Hi, Lazydays! Welcome to the forum! An 11 pound endometriotic tumor???!!! WOW!!! That is amazing! I didn't know endometriosis could take that form! That's wild! As far as the Mirena IUD, you might try doing a search on it. Here is a link to a thread that discusses Mirena in detail. cjlevett.proboards33.com/index.cgi?action=display&board=introductions&thread=1152290044&page=1Also, here are some tips on searching. (copied/pasted from another post) The best way I have found to get the best results on a search is to scroll near the bottom of the search page. There, you will find an option that says, "Posted within the last." You can type the amount of time back you'd like to search. I usually type in 365 days. The next option down from that allows you to choose how many responses per search you want shown. I think it defaults to 10. Hope that helps

Yes, my surgeon said he wasn't even sure it could BE an endometrian tumor until he could get it out. He said he wasn't able to find any of that size in any of his books, either. When I first went in the nurse measured me and said I measured 7 months pregnant. I was dumb. Waited too long. I was in college and scared to death.
Anyhow, I tried to do the search and nothing came up at all for IUD or Mirena. I wasn't sure if I did something wrong, b/c I really thought you all would have some great feedback on this. I will try your link and try the search again. I would love to get some personal feedback.
Thanks so much! Amy

Hi, Lazydays. Try it again using the search tips I added to the previous post on this thread or clicking on the main link I posted. Once there, copy/paste this post, and I bet you'll get some more replies. Don't give up. You'll get personal responses, I promise. It's just that a lot of the info has already been answered in other posts, and some people get tired of re-typing the same info, and also it helps to keep the thread concise if all of the topics are sorted. Don't give up!

hi!! I had the same problem when I first joined here trying to find info on the mirena. No one seemed to have had it. I was diagnosed with endo a little over 2 years ago after a lap. I tried several different things for treatment and just went in 2 weeks ago for my 2nd lap and had the mirena put in at the same time. I haven't had it long enough to tell you much about it, but I will keep you posted. I actually had to call my dr this am because I have been cramping (which keeps getting worse) since I had it inserted. They want me to come in to make sure it hasnt expelled or come out of postition, so thats a little scary. I will keep you posted on what happens... I was so excited to try the mirena hoping that it would be great for pain relief and birth control, but I'm not sure yet! Hopefully it is fine and I will be able to let you know how it works!! I know this thread is about a month old or so, but I still wanted to post my expierence with a IUD. After having my daughter I looked into some type of BC that was not hormonal, and my friends told me about the IUD. So after looking into I had it put in, let me tell you that was not the smartest thing to do. I caused my pain to increase. My doct. had told me that could happen but of course I was like naaa, I'll be fine. Should have listend to him... Nope finally after a year I had to have it removed,I could not take it anymore, then I had to have another lap. It casued me to have more scare tissue and the IUD would run against the endo. it was bad I would not recommend a IUD for anyone that has endo.

If you got the non-hormonal IUD (paragard) I"m not surprised it caused everything to get worse as it causes heavier bleeding and cramping. The hormonal one (mirena) typically stops your period so it relieves the pain associated with menstruation. And actually I started with paragard and after it expelled is when my everyday pain happened so it could have causes my endo to worsen too, but mirena has done wonders for me.

Just an update.... I am still trying to remain optimistic about this mirena. I went to the doctors a week and a half ago for an ultrasound to make sure that it was still in the right postition and everything looked perfectly fine. I am not having as much cramping with it now as I was the first few weeks after it was insterted, but I havent stopped bleeding since my lap (which was july 26th). For the first 3 or 4 weeks, it was mainly just light brown spotting. But almost two weeks ago I started what seems to be my period. It isn't heavy, but its been nearly two weeks now and doesnt feel like it is going to end!! I just keep hoping that it will stop and that I wont end up at the gyno. yet again, but if another week or so goes by like this I will probably call again.... did anyone else have this kind of experience with the mirena?? I keep telling myself that this is just my body's way of getting used to it and that my cycle is probably just regulating itself, but I just dont know... I had the same kind of thing happen to me when I was on the continuous therapy bc pills last year. I bled for months and it took forever to get back to normal. bleeding for months also caused me to get an awful yeast infection on the outside that took months and so many medications to get rid of.... I am so afraid that it will happen again if I dont get myself back to normal!!

I used to have 2 day periods, incredibly painful but not much bleeding. After mirena was inserted I had a 10 day period heavier than normal for me too. Then the following month I had a 5 day period, then no more periods. I don't know if this helps you but that is what happened with me after getting the mirena

ok!! thanks for the response!! That really helps a lot. I am going to wait and see what happens. hopefully after a few cycles I will end up with a result close to what you have!! I am not even wishing to have no period at all (although that would be amazing!!) I am just wanting to not bleed all month!!! you know?? Its getting pretty frustating, but I am going to try it a bit longer and just hope and pray for the best!! Thanks again!! and I am glad the mirena is working out for you!!
