I have to admit, I've been vegetarian for over a decade, but I was dreaming about steak. Odd, because even when I ate meat, I didn't like steak particularly. I was all about the fried chicken.
I've been pigging out on kale, lentils, blackstrap molasses on sweet potatoes, and dark chocolate.

So because I don't know anything about anything medical, I wanted to ask this question to see what you all thought.
Here's my theory: the Mirena thins the lining of the uterus, which means it thins the blood supply in the body, right? I also read somewhere else that the hormone in the Mirena thins the blood supply.
Could the bouts with anemia after using this thing be affected also by that? I know it my case there are many other reasons--my farther (who seems to have my same metabolic structure and weird irregular heart beat) also struggles with anemia; I'm small, vegetarian, and athletic; I bleed while the mirena was in and A LOT after it was pulled.
But I was just curious.

My good news of the day is that I think I have finally recovered from that IUD!
1. the acne is starting to go away--I even got a stye in my eye on that thing. 2. I've finally started to feel normal levels of energy after becoming anemic with the blood loss. I still get out of breath after biking up a big hill, but can actually do it, which is good. 3. (and sorry for TMI) but I seem to be able to have sex without a ton of lubricant. I don't know what that mirena does to your natural lubrication, but it dried me up completely. I felt like the sub Saharan desert in there. And I've spent a lot of time in Darfur with my job so I know what I'm talking about!!!

Glad to hear all of this myrtle! I had terrible acne on the mirena, it's still coming and going now unfortunately. I hope yours is going and gone for good! I also dried up and nothing is tmi my dear! I have to speak to my doctor frankly about that as it's continued and it's just a mood killer. One of those moments where the other person asks timidly 'is it me?' And the anaemia... I don't think other people understand til they've experienced it themselves. Glad you're back to being you. I would I could have set my mirena on fire both times that I tried em and had em pulled... fat lot of good they did as they gave more problems than I started with!

Ooh, glad to hear you're getting rid of the effects! I had the awful greasy skin and acne on that torture device, too. I always had dryness issues with any kind of BC and sex was the worst! No lube seemed to help. Sigh.

Thanks, both of you! I'm getting stronger every day, so hope soon I'll put this behind me. The acne is improving too, but definitely still there.
Cherry, I hope the acne for you starts going more than coming!

So I've had my Mirena now for a little over a year and I'm starting to have A LOT of pain again. I'm not sure what is going on and I have an appointment with my doctor but I wanted to know if anyone has had their Mirena IUD embedded or had ovarian cysts from it because I don't know what else it could be. The pain is becoming so bad that I don't know how much more I can stand it....anyone out there? Can you help?

I had a good friend have it imbedded in her uterus, but she didn't have any pain. She only found out because she tried to have it removed so she could try to get pregnant again and they couldn't find it... Perhaps your body is trying to expel it? I know mine never settled down and it was an awful, constant feeling. The second it came out, I felt instant relief.
I hope you get some relief soon! Have you considered having it removed, or are you going to try to stick it out and try other things?

I got cysts from the mirena, and I only had it in 2 weeks. My body rejected it by itself. It was a horrible 2 weeks though, and took me a long time to recover.

Posting this here instead of on my update thread because I'm pretty sure I'm going to be joining the 'Mirena is an Instrument of Torture Club'. I'm convinced that I'm either expelling my Mirena or there is something seriously wrong with it. It was inserted during my lap on the 6th of this month and was fine for the first two weeks; no bleeding or spotting etc. Then I started bleeding (a period?) last Thurs (the 20th), the day after my real period would have been due. The flow has been heavy and clotty and the cramps have been awful, but different from my usual 'awful cramps'. The central cramps I'm feeling are very low down, almost like it's my cervix/the top of my vag that's cramping. The rest of my cramping is concentrated on my right hand side, very low down, radiating down to my hip, groin and thigh and round to my lower back. No cramping on my left side whatsoever. Bleeding seems to have slowed down to I lighter level as of last night/this morning, but the pain is actually worse now and more strongly concentrated very low on my right hand side. I suppose it could be a cyst and not perforation/expulsion but I dunno. Have been fitted in for an emergency appointment with my GP in an hour, so we'll see how it goes. What really sucks is it's my first week back at work post lap and already having to call in sick. Again.

Hannah, I'm so sorry. I know how important your job is to you. I hope that they appointment goes ok and they figure out what is going on. The good news is that if it's the mirena, they can just pop it out. But then, you don't have it to helpw ith pain or lighten the periods...

So...as I feared, GP checked the Minrena and she couldn't find the strings. I know it hasn't fallen out because I've been watching for it VERY carefully ever since all this started. So, either my uterus has swallowed it and it is still in my uterus or it has perforated my uterus and is floating around in my pelvic cavity somewhere. So scared. Worried they might say I expelled it without noticing but I know I haven't cause I've been watching for it ever since the pain started, plus if I'd expelled it the pain would have improved instead of worsened. Trying not to assume the worst, but based on my pain and the fact that it's concentrated on my right side rather than my uterus...I'm struggling not to assume the worst. If it's perforation, it'll mean yet another lap for me to retreive it from wherever it is. Even if it is still in my uterus it'll mean going under again for them to dialate my cervix and remove it.
Also, speculums can join my list of instruments of torture. The exam was the most painful experience of my life, bar none. Apparently my cervix is tilted backwards and she had to do all sorts of maneuvering to get it into view; all while I was in agony already. Then, when she finally got it into view, there was too much blood for her to see anything, so she had to take it out, start all over again with a different speculum so she could get wads of cotton wool up there to wipe off my cervix so she could see. Cried like a baby. Felt sorry for the doc; she was close to tears herself at having to inflict more pain on me and kept apologising, but she had to do it because it was the only way she could see.
Anyhoo, she's referred me back to the hospital where a had my lap. She managed to get them to fit me in as an emergency to have a scan and see the gynae registrar. My appointment is at 3 (hour and a quarter from now). Don't know what comes next, but I assume if they don't see it on the scan they'll send me for an abdominal X-ray to try and locate it. And then another lap.
Wish I could say it's probably just fallen out without me noticing, but I know I'd have seen it. I've been checking obsessively. And besides, if it had fallen out then what would explain all my pain? Anyhoo. Can't do anything but wait now. I'm in so much pain but trying not to take pain killers because I want them to be able to see the full extent of my pain when I go to hospital. Will update you as and when I know more.
