Hi, all. I've been reading these boards for the last week, trying to understand a little bit more about endo, as I seem to have fallen into the diagnosis without any warning.
I went for an annual well-woman and the NP, whom I hadn't seen before, felt something irregular on the right side of my uterus. An ultrasound a week later showed a 7cm chocolate cyst. I left the ultrasound appointment not knowing what that was or why I had it, until I started googling. Last week, at my follow-up with the OBGYN, we decided laparoscopy should be the next step in dealing with it. My surgery was scheduled for Nov. 20, but on Friday the doctor called and rescheduled it for Dec. 17.
I'm 36, didn't get my first period until I was almost 15, and have never had very painful or heavy/long-lasting periods. I got pregnant accidentally practically on my honeymoon and my son was born after a complicated pregnancy in which I developed pretty bad edema along with hypertension and borderline preeclampsia, and ended up with an emergency c-section. My only hint before my eventful pregnancy that something was unusual about my body was my retroverted uterus, which my first gyno mentioned during a well woman exam. Oh, and I've always had pain during intercourse--not after, but during--except while I was pregnant.
A few years ago I started having terrible bouts of severe intestinal gas. They were always in the middle of my cycle, would last 24-48 hours, and usually left me bedridden and gasping in pain for hours. I started taking strong probiotics and keeping extra-strength Gas-X in the house just in case. I haven't had a recurrence of one of those episodes in over a year because of vigilance with the probiotics, I think. I also seem to have bouts of constipation/diarrhea when I get my period, especially during the last few years.
So there's my weird collection of symptoms. Endo seems to answer the question "What is weird about my body?" I'm frustrated that I wasn't more proactive and aggressive about finding treatment for my pelvic pain during sex; I'm grateful and humbled that I was able to get pregnant, and that my pain is manageable. I'm worried about the intervening time before my lap, as a good friend of mine had a large chocolate cyst rupture and that seems dreadful. I'm worried about what they'll find during the lap, and I'm worried it will turn into a laparotomy because of complications or something. I'm worried about losing my right ovary. My sister is getting married out-of-state in mid-January; I'm the matron-of-honor, and I am really frustrated at the idea of having to wait surgery until less than a month before it. Ugh.
Thanks for all your contributions to this board! I'm looking forward to reading and learning more here.
