Hi all,
Just wanted to follow up my introduction post with the outcome of my surgical solution to adenomyosis.
To recap, 45 years old, 3 kids... youngest is 15. Had come to find out that I had adeno after asking for a copy of the ultrasound. The only reason I had asked for a copy is because when I was called by the doctor to give me the results, I was told everything was fine--I just had a small uterine cyst. Because of research I had done while waiting for the lab results, I knew cysts were usually ovarian, whereas the uterus normally gets fibroids, polyps, and adeno.
Once l had my results, I scheduled an appt with a gyno. We initially decided to remove uterus and tubes, but keep the ovaries and cervix. After more research, I decided to have my ovaries and cervix removed. It seems my mom and her mom both had to return for removal of their ovaries within a year of their hysterectomies (which were performed because their uteruses were fused to the back wall).
The pathology came back that everything was benign, however, adeno and endo were present. One ovary had 2 follicular cysts, and the other had several corpus luteum cysts that had no epithelial layer (whatever the heck that means!). My uterus was beyond retroflexed (tilted backward); it had actually FOLDED backwards onto itself!
Gyno did the surgery on Jan 5. I spent one night in the hospital because I felt pretty rough (had super low blood pressure). I was off work last week and started backup this week, but from home thankfully. Got off the pain meds by day 5 post-op, and had my first BM on day 6. Some intestinal pain from gas and some mild incision pain, but bearable. Still tire easily but feel like my brain turned back on while working today.
During surgery they put a .1mg Estradiol patch on me, and I've been given an Rx for 1 year's worth, but am hopeful that after 3 months, when my healing is definitively finished, I can wean off, since the package info states that the dose is not strong enough to provide any osteo or heart benefits. I love milk and vitamin D is my friend, so I'm confident I'll be okay.
I also quit my 30-year smoking habit on surgery day, so I'm 9 days cigarette free!
That's about all for now. Feeling better every day, and happy that all those long, unbearable periods are finally behind me.
Hugs,
T.
