Hi ladies,
I am really struggling with my recovery, mostly I think due to the pain medication I was on. I am in a difficult place in life anyway--financially stressed, we recently moved to a new state with no family or friends, and we were both in a car accident earlier in the year and lost our car (emotionally draining + financial loss). I am a full-time student and work on the weekends, so I also haven't had a lot of time to myself during the year, and with my health being so bad prior to surgery, I haven't been able to work-out.
With all that being said, I think the percocet and norco that were prescribed after surgery are making me slightly depressed. I keep crying all the time... I feel completely sorry for myself (not usual for me)... I am picking fights with my boyfriend... I am questioning all my life decisions... Overall, I feel like I am drowning and miserable and just want to be back to "normal."
Have any of you felt like this after surgery? Or due to the pain meds? I know things will improve once I return to work this week, as I will be on the road back to "normal" and it will help ease the financial pressure, but right now I feel so sad and, in a way, wished I never had the pain meds...
:/

I'm so sorry you're feeling down. I (and some others, according to the boards) went through a post-op funk. I remember being very emotional and crying, picking fights with my bf, etc. Narcotics can definitely be a factor, along with financial stress. It sounds like you are used to being busy, so the lack of activity could be making you feel down. I know when I took 2 weeks off from full time work and school, I didn't feel like myself. Hopefully when you get back to your normal routine and can step off of the pain meds you will feel better. Hang in there!

I think that low feeling is quite common, unfortunately. Some speculate that it's the anesthesia, at least in part, as well. Did you know that when anesthesia was developed, it was only tested on men, which is why they recover from it so much faster than us women!?!?!
Drugs, anesthesia, whatever it is - please know that this will pass and is only temporary!

Thanks ladies! I can't tell you how much your messages gave me hope that I would get through this and that it's temporary... I had no idea that anesthesia was only tested on men!!... I've always been very sensitive to anesthesia..well, almost all drugs really :/ So I do think it is highly probable that my moods have been affected by all the drugs, including the anesthesia.
I returned to work for the first time today--I work as a server in a fast-paced restaurant so it is very physical work. While it felt great have purpose and make money (hence easing the financial strain some), it was very hard physically and I had to keep taking "sit" breaks in the back. I know it will ease in time, but it just shows me what a "hit" my body has taken...
I just don't think I anticipated how difficult the recovery would be, both physically and psychologically...

Thanks nibletz! I am feeling better day by day, although I still seem to have dark spells where I just cry :/ Quite awful really. I started working out again yesterday, which was wonderful--exercise has often been my stress release, so it was great to get back into it. The diet is a work in progress!
