Thought id reply to this here Ouchy.
Ive also read this about home abortion but have been unable to find anything that supports this claim or in the least explains why it would work. Am wondering too how much is considered a mega dose.
Have read about research that claims the previous research done which claimed excess vitamin C was excreted in the urine was not accurate research, because vit C has a 30min half life, and the test was done 12hrs later so therefore invalid. Research has now shown that it does increase blood serum levels if taken in divided doses, also alot to say that a minimum dose is actually 2000mg per day and that the RDI is only enough to prevent scurvy and not enough to reach optimal levels.
How much was the mega dose that caused miscarriage? Was it in divided doses? My interest is now genuinely sparked in the vitamin C debate.
Id really love to find something that explains its effect on the uterus and on estrogen levels, if anyone has anything on that please post it really want to know that.
I am convinced its safe enough to take vitamin C as a supplement, but there is obviously something in this about fertility if it can be used for abortion. It may be an area poorly researched and that could be why nothing is available, and therefore all we may have to go by is peoples accounts, which is still worth noting. Its possible that because the theory hasnt been disproven fertility books warn against it just in case, which is still reason enough.
Am very interested in peoples thoughts on this, such a huge subject once i started really looking into it.

I'm also guessing it is poorly researched! I haven't read anything having to do with estrogen levels and taking it, though. I haven't read anything that shows what in it causes the miscarriages for that matter. The only thing I have read is that "herbal abortions" usually have something to do with toxicity. I know that vitamins aren't herbs, but maybe it would fall into this category for abortion??? There are enough anecdotal stories at the least to make me stay away from it at least while I'm pregnant, though. I wish I had time to research it more. Maybe on my month off before the baby arrives. LOL

I haven't really read all of this. Just found it in a quick search. "Home Abortion Remedy - Vitamin C." www.sisterzeus.com/Hsp1shlp.htm***Oh, I'm starting to read it, and it's kind of depressing! I wonder if women really do this?!? I'd feel much safer with a medical abortion than taking concoctions!

On another website, I found where someone states that Vit. C causes abortion by interfering w/ progesterone production. However, the author of the webpage does not list references! ________________________________________ "What is it? Vitamin C is known as ascorbic acid, and is required by the human body to form collagen and protect against scurvy. It is found naturally in citrus fruit, green peppers, sweet and hot peppers, potatoes, spinach, parsley, cabbage, broccoli, brussel sprouts, rose hips, black currants and other berries, tomatoes, horseradish, and watercress. What happens? Vitamin C may produce an abortion when taken in high doses by interfering with progesterone production. Progesterone is necessary to maintain a pregnancy. What are the risks? - Those with kidney problems of any kind, a glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase deficiency, hemosiderosis, hemochromatosis, sickle cell anemia, or who have difficulty metabolizing Vitamin C should avoid large amounts of Vitamin C. - Those who take anti-coagulants (such as aspirin or other prescription drugs) also should not take large amounts of Vitamin C.. - Side effects of taking high doses of Vitamin C may include abdominal cramping, hot flashes, rashes, constipation, gas, diarrhea, headache, increased urination, irritability, joint pains, fatigue, weakness, insomnia, upset stomach, osteoporosis, anemia, low blood sugar, kidney irritation, and may deplete the body of the essential mineral copper (which decreases the body's ability to fight disease). And a pro-vitamin C study by a doctor who gave his patients megadoses of Vit C!!! Very nice study and it DOES have references and all! ________________________________________ "Primary and lasting benefits in pregnancy. Observations made on over 300 consecutive obstetrical cases using supplemental ascorbic acid, by mouth, convinced me that failure to use this agent in sufficient amounts in pregnancy borders on malpractice. The lowest amount of ascorbic acid used was 4 grams and the highest amount 15 grams each day. (Remember the rat-no stress manufactures equivalent "C" up to 4 grams and with stress up to 15.2 grams). Requirements were roughly 4 grams first trimester, 6 grams second trimester and 10 grams third trimester. Approximately 20 percent required 15 grams, each day, during last trimester. Eighty percent of this series received a booster injection of 10 grams, intravenously, on admission to the hospital. Hemoglobin levels were much easier to maintain. Leg cramps were less than three percent and always was associated with "getting out" of Vitamin C tablets. Striae gravidarum was seldom encountered and when it was present there existed an associated problem of too much eating and too little walking. The capacity of the skin to resist the pressure of an expanding uterus will also vary in different individuals. Labor was shorter and less painful. There were no postpartum hemmorhages. The perineum was found to be remarkably elastic and episiotomy was performed electively. Healing was always by first intention and even after 15 and 20 years following the last child the firmness of the perineum is found to be similar to that of a primigravida in those who have continued their daily supplemental vitamin C. No patient required catheterization. No toxic manifestations were demonstrated in this series. There was no cardiac stress even though 22 patients of the series had rheumatic hearts. One patient in particular was carried through two pregnancies without complications. She had been warned by her previous obstetrician that a second pregnancy would terminate with a maternal death. She received no ascorbic acid with her first pregnancy. This lady has been back teaching school for the past 10 years. She still takes 10 grams of ascorbic acid daily. Infants born under massive ascorbic acid therapy were all robust. Not a single case required resuscitation. We experienced no feeding problems. The Fultz quadruplets were in this series. They took milk nourishment on the second day. These babies were started on 50 mg ascorbic acid the first day and, of course, this was increased as time went on. Our only nursery equipment was one hospital bed, an old, used single unit hot plate and an equally old 10 quart kettle. Humidity and ascorbic acid tells this story. They are the only quadruplets that have survived in southeastern United States. Another case of which I am lustly proud is one in which we delivered 10 children to one couple. All are healthy and good looking. There were no miscarriages. All are living and well. They are frequently referred to as the vitamin C kids, in fact all of the babies from this series were called "Vitamin C Babies" by the nursing personnel--they were distinctly different." www.nutri.com/wn/klenner.html

Well read through that last site posted last night, well worth the read, though a little time consuming, so make sure uve got plenty of time when anyone sits down to read it all.
Have made the decision i am more than happy now to continue taking vit C, and think i probs havent been taking enough.
So, im gonna start with 4.5g per day (1/2g in my iron tab anyway) in divided doses and increase later. I have my gastroscope friday so dont want to start doses higher than that before and think its best to grad increase. Will stop thursday so none is left in my system just in case it interferes with results, and recommence slowly increasing to tolerance.
It seems safe for pregnancy considering that study done, I would have questioned the study cept it was a good size group to draw conclusions from, interesting that the abortion recommendations are actually about 10g and only work in the first 4 weeks, in the study the 1st trimester women were only given 4g.
