My daughter started the endo diet yesterday, and we've been perusing the book. Carolyn talks about avoiding "tinned" foods. Does anyone have experience with using them versus not? And does anyone know what is wrong with tinned food? I made chili tonite with canned beans, corn and tomato sauce. Although the foods in the chili are all endo diet approved, the fact that those items are canned makes it a no-no, right?
FYI, the diet is really hard, but I am so very proud of my girl for trying. Not easy for a 17yo to give up every food she loves, but she is so tired of the pain.

I have not read Carolyn's book. I think the main issue with all canned foods (tomatoes are the worst) is the BPA in the can lining. Bis Phenol-A is an estrogen mimic. BPA is in most canned foods. However, it's also in a lot of plastic containers, too. I eat canned oysters, salmon, mackeral, and sardines because, in the Midwest, that is the most cost-effective way to get oily fish. I try to avoid most other canned foods but I don't stress about it because cortisol throws your hormones off balance, too! Try to buy tomato products that are in glass. The lid still has BPA but the food is not coming into contact with it as much. That's awesome that your daughter is open to the diet! Good for her.

I actually thought BPA was going to be banned eventually. Hopefully at least! What I avoid when using canned foods are the ones that have preservatives in it like EDTA. EDTA is "supposed" to be safe but they used to say the same thing about gluten, if you catch my drift. There are other organic canned foods that don't have all that crap in it like the 365 brand and the Nature's Promise brand.

I'm with the rest of the girls--I avoid canned foods as much as I can, because of hte preservatives. However, I do cheat sometimes with canned beans. Though you can make beans in 10 minutes from dry to ready-to-eat in a pressure cooker...

Some of the things in the chili are organic and canned (from the always awesome Trader Joe's) so maybe those are okay. I will look for the EDTA that you mentioned, Jenaya. She really prefers to eat whole, and even raw. Wouldn't it be amazing if her pain dissipated in the next few months? We went to pain management yesterday and switched up her meds. The only drug that has ever helped is Darvocet, and that was taken off the market. She takes Vicodin daily (I know, UGH). We now have Tramadol to try, along with a strong anti-inflammatory (the name of which I can't remember right now). Thank you for your help, ladies. Always so blessed to know you are here to answer questions.

Poor thing. She's so young to be dealing with this. I really hope it helps her.

Ugh, I haven't even thought much about canned food! I usually only use canned beans and diced tomatoes. Whenever I try to soak beans they come out terrible (I don't have a pressure cooker). It feels like everything is so fake these days, no wonder our bodies are crazy!
I love Trader Joe's! They label things very well. Good luck, clairboe.

Hopefully some of you will see this - it's not canned food related, though:
Sarah Jo is doing pretty well on the diet, but she has gotten really depressed at times, too. She REALLY wants something sweet, like a cookie. We are going to Whole Foods tomorrow to get some gluten free cookies that are sweetened with agave nectar.
Do any of you have any advice about how to satisfy the sweet tooth without sabotaging the diet?

I kill off my sweet tooth with dehydrated fruit. I go to whole foods and get bags of trail mix that have dehydrated berries in them. It's pretty good. Also golden raisins are super sweet, loaded in fiber, and have anti-inflammatory properties. It's not exactly chocolate but for some reason after I eat a handful my cravings go away. Also there is coconut ice cream that's really super awesome and delicious. Whole Foods carries "Coconut Bliss" which comes in different flavors and is gluten free, soy free, and vegan. Plus coconut milk is really really good for you. coconutbliss.com/About the depression, it's funny because initially the diet can make you feel like absolute crap and I think it's partly because it's such a drastic change and partly because your body has to adapt. It's extremely hard to get over that hurdle. I remember I got pretty irritable and tired for a while but it does go away. I hope she can stick it out!

The diet is soooo hard to maintain ALL of the time, and it's probably better to have the odd small 'cheat' than get so fed she falls off the wagon altogether. I'm with jenaya, dried fruit or fresh fruit takes me sweet cravings away. I recently caved and bough myself a bar of 85% organic dark chocolate - a couple of small pieces of that and I'm happy! And there is GOOD stuff in that type of chocolate too, like antioxidants! After all...chocolate does come from a plant :-)

If it helps, my latest kick is ice cream - I've been hogging down a brand called Coconut Bliss (I know we have an ice cream thread around here). Gluten free, dairy free, and it actually tastes like ice cream! Although I cheat from time to time, I always kick myself as I pay for it... Keeps the temptation to a minimum, and then I just supplement with things that are ok but make me feel like I'm cheating! Having some ice cream as I speak... for dinner!

We got the Coconut Bliss the other day at Whole Foods, Karen! It is soooo good (according to my girl). She is finding the diet really hard, but I am so proud of her for sticking to it. She feels AWFUL, but I was glad to read that that's pretty normal for the beginnings of the diet. She has been on pain killers everyday for a couple YEARS, in addition to migraine meds, birth control pills, etc. I am sure her body is freaking out. I hope and pray her pain abates a bit. We are still going forward with going to see Dr. Cook, but her life is just becoming more and more limited. She should be planning her high school graduation...instead, she hasn't even completed two full years of high school.

Poor thing! I'm glad to hear she likes the ice cream though so she can at least have something to enjoy. I hope she sticks it out. It's so hard but worth it!

Clairboe, have the doctors investigated a link between the bc pills and migraines? Did she always have migraines, or did they show up more recently.
I feel so sorry for yoru daughter. Hopefully this diet helps her!
