I am reading a book called "Nourishing Traditions" by Sally Fallon. She is the president of the Weston A. Price Foundation. There is a chapter on oils where she states that some of us (from ancestors who ate a lot of fish) are "obligate carnivores" because we are unable to make very-long-chain fatty acids (we don't have the right enzyme). We have to consume them from animal products, such as eggs, Fish oil, and organ meats. I'm a ginger - not bright red hair but auburn, pale skin, and freckles everywhere. Gingers are definitely descended from coastal people. I was also vegetarian for about a decade and my period pain seemed to get worse as time went by (I thought it was just age). Last year I started supplementing with a lot of fish oil and it made my periods a non-event. I think I made a connection here. Just thought I'd share.

Been reading a couple more nutrition books and found this quote from the book Primal Body, Primal Mind by Nora Gedgaudas.
"Individuals of northern European , coastal Irish, Scandinavian, Inuit, and Native American descent may not produce [delta-6 desaturase] at all and may actually have an increased requirement for EPA and DHA due to genetic adaptation to the abundance of these substances in their ancestral diets. Deficiencies of Omega-3 fatty acids and insulin resistance (metabolic disorders) are exceedingly common among these populations."

Hmm, interesting. I'm a Scandinavian... Thought fish oil pills did absolutely nothing for me.
