Hi everyone, I'm scheduled for my first lap on Feb. 24. I'm already nervous as it is, and now the way it's looking it might be CD 1 for me. Ugh! It's my heaviest flow day. Has anyone had a lap while on their period? I'm freaking out about this. Thanks!

This has actually been an interesting topic among all of us. Usually it depends on your doctor's preference on when during your cycle is the best time for a lap. Some show no preference at all. There is another thread (I'll have to dig for it) where we kind of came up with our own theory of when we should have a lap. We were thinking that our laps should be scheduled when our symptoms are the worst so that the doctor has the highest chance of actually visualizing all of the endometriosis. Since the endo lesions fluctuate with your cycle, we were thinking that having a lap during the time when your endo is the worst is the best time to have a lap done. That way they can see it all and remove as much as possible. I have tried to research this to see if this is true but I didn't find anything. It's just a guess among us endo girls but it makes sense to us!
My doctor likes to do the lap right after the period. I have no idea why. I don't think having your lap during your period will be a problem but if you want a little more peace of mind then I would call your doctor and just tell them your concerns and see if it's an issue for them. Most of us have mild spotting/bleeding after a lap anyways so having your period won't really change that part of it. I'm sorry you're nervous! Definitely vent to us! We've all been through it and know how you feel!

According to my doctor he doesn't really have a preference, though if he can do a laproscopy during a period he said, "it sure makes my job easier." Which of course makes sense because that is when Endometriosis is most active. He actually did explain that yes Endometriosis is the easiest to spot during the cycle. He stated he did not need me to be menstruating to find it, but if I was the Endo would definitely stand out more. Though his eyes did light up like a kid on Christmas when I confirmed before surgery that my prediction came true.
I was at the absolute worst peek of my period (beginning of day 2) when I had my laproscopy, and other than the pre-op time being absolutely miserable (no pain meds, and no appropriate protection) there was no issue. However, I also got a bonus of whatever they did during the surgery wiping my period out.
I think what it comes down to, as it does with everything laproscopy for endo, is having a good surgeon. A good surgeon is going to be comfortable working with all the period mess, and just see it as a bonus. A good surgeon is likely to get the endo with or without a cycle. A not so confident doc might not be comfortable doing surgery with a full blown cycle, and miss endo either way.
