Did you know that some of the classis required for graduation actually were challendged. The Great Gatsby, To Kill A Mocking Bird, Catcher in the Rye, The Color Purple. I will post a site from the ALA that goes into more detail. As a reader and a library employee I have to be thankful for all books we can not be the judge of what is approriate. Happy to have our right to choose:)

My parents had to sign a permission slip saying I could read Catcher in the Rye for a class project in high school. It's pretty incredible what books people consider controversial.

Of those i read to kill a mockingbird..i thought it was a good book and i dont see how it could be banned. They made us read this book Z for Zachariah (that book literally gave me nightmares as a grade 8 student).

Just because I'm obstinate as hell, I think I will put every damn one of these books on my to-read list. That and I'm curious. I watched "Creation" for the same reasons (it was not allowed in US theaters).

Let's see, I have read The Great Gatsby (wasn't very impressed), To Kill a Mockingbird (excellent portrayal of racial tensions during that time period), The Lord of the Flies (LOVED it!), Animal Farm (thought it was hilarious), One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest (could that book BE any better?), Slaughterhouse Five (love Vonnegut), The Call of the Wild (it was an abridged version, so I kinda feel cheated). I've seen movies of a few of the others, but you know the movies are never as good as the books.

It's crazy that list you put up initially Keri, because all of them are on English lit/lang reading lists around the world now. Shows that some books are banned for probably the wrong reasons.
