My computer has been on its last legs for a long time. I got the thing (desktop) in 2005 when I got my car. It came free with a new car purchase, so it's not like it was the top of the line to begin with. It freezes up, takes forever to open some things, and is just plain awful. I nursed it from death (virus) a few years ago and have been able to keep the spyware at bay, but it's almost ready to put her down.
I've been looking at laptops, figured I might be able to get a good deal with all the back to school prices. I'm looking to refinance my house and if that's the case, I'll finally be able to afford a big purchase. So... any tips on what I should be looking for in a new laptop? I'm clueless when it comes to speed, hard drive sizes, processors, etc. I have an HP laptop at work that I absolutely love, though I have no idea what parts and pieces inside make me love it - it just works fast and hasn't failed me yet. Any must-haves, features you see on yours that you don't need, etc?

Mine's ANCIENT too and has all the probs yours has. Don't go for the cheapest on offer, but don't go for the most expensive either, unless you're really playing around with graphics and images, downloading loads of movies etc, top of the range will be overkill. Even a mid-range laptop will give you more than you'll ever really need when it comes to HDD (hard drive) and RAM (memory). Don't worry too much about the brand, but try and make sure it's an Intel processor, I do think they're the best.

Intel Core Duo is supposed to be good. What you need really depends on what you will use it for.
