I eat goat's yogurt and goat cheese (not just feta - it's comes in other forms too - including goat cheddar). This seems fine with my digestive system, although regular cow's yogurt and cheese doesn't seem to bother me either. A good substitute for ice cream is Coconut Bliss which is made from coconut milk, so it's dairy free. I actually like it better than ice cream. One of the most blissful desserts I ever had was Coconut Bliss vanilla flavor with fresh cherries in it. Yum! it doesn't have a strong coconut taste in the vanilla, chocolate or mint flavors.

i was just going to console you gals with the option of COCONUT MILK ICE CREAM!! i'm with you, redwood, it's better than the "real" thing. yay, and you already love it, jenaya! seriously, it's ridiculous, and you can easily find it organic and i won't swear all of them are like this, but the last one i had the sweetener was agave nectar. endo girls' dream come true!! we just polished off a pint of the chocolate and agreed it was among the best chocolate ice creams we've had. warning: t'is pricey. but no added cost of bloating, gas, etc! so my pre-vegan princesses... (jk, i'm not trying to convert anyone) the thing with cheese that sucks so bad is that cows contain a morphine-like enzyme in their bodies (i'll post a true scientific explanation later) that we ingest, which is why EVERYONE names cheese as the one reason they could absolutely never eat a vegan diet. don't blame it on will power, it goes beyond that. but that's part of the good news, too, because like sugar, once you break the cycle, you lose the craving. here's a good link, sad but true, enfuriating and fascinating: www.healthdiaries.com/blogs/vegetarianblues/archives/2004/09/casein_and_cheese_more_addictive_than_chocolate.html

I found that ice cream at Whole Foods. Everything is at Whole Foods! I need to twist hubby's arm to shop there but it's so expensive

so as for my own slippage... poopy emotional day yesterday, lots of tears and relationship stuff to wade through, so bf suggests we change our tune and hit up our favorite chinese place. they are one of few places in town where not only are there several vegan options for us to choose from, but the food is *fresh*. so i go along thinking, yum, noodles! and i eat eat eat the noodles, eat noodles eat. totally not even thinking that they're wheat, like didn't even enter my mind. and usually bf is the "are you sure you want to eat that?" police, but he must have been in eat noodles eat mode, too. within 20 minutes, what was my waning period pain came back hardcore, and then i was convinced that carrying the newly-spayed 25 lb puppy up two flights of stairs was no problem for me (even though i clearly know it is), so the rest of the night was miserable, had a hard time falling asleep, woke up at the butt-crack of dawn, and am still hurting. so my lesson in all this: CARRY the noodles and (don't) EAT the puppy!

AWW what a bummer! A lot of Asian places, especially Thai, use rice noodles. If you get another noodle attack that might be a good thing to look for on the menu.

yes, i live by rice noodles! and thai food! this place doesn't have them but their dandan noodles (spicy, peanut-y, garlic-y) are amaaazing. whole foods is the best, but there's a reason it's also called whole paycheck. i'm not a big fan of shopping at walmart in general, but they recently started carrying coconut milk ice cream!!!

yes, sorry I forgot to mention that it's expensive (and even more so in Canada than the US). So....I don't buy it that often. I buy it also at Whole Foods (aka "Whole Paycheck" lol). But now that I think of it, I should buy some more, while cherries are still in season. I just love the vanilla with the cherries. I almost do it half and half- half ice cream, half cherries. You can get 4 servings out of the tiny carton that way too. and yes! I did notice that they use agave in it too, rather than sugar. I think it's organic too. Better be for the price they charge for it!

I think we have a whole thread on that coconut bliss ice cream! It's good stuff! The only thing I've found is that I get constipated when I eat it... I heard years ago (not sure if there's any truth) that coconut has a binding effect, and if you have the runs, a pinch full of coconut will slow things down, but I don't know how true it is. All I know is that if I eat the ice cream, I have a hard time pooping for days!
My favorite is melting some peanut butter at the bottom of my bowl, then putting chocolate coconut ice cream on top and swirling them together. Mmmm....

That's crazy that it has a binding effect because I thought the bromolain in it helps break down proteins better. I love coconut. I want to get some and throw a few pineapples in there. Pina colada aye aye aye mammi!

so I'm not sure that this is the right thread for this, but I wanted to know ohter people's experience. before eliminating wheat, and making sure that I really do not eat things with preservatives as much as possible (we're even making our own corn tortillas, from scratch now), I had horrible stomach pains that I attributed to problems with spicy food. But now I can eat spicy food with no problem (we've been eating tons of chilis). All my stomach problems--all those rounds of prilosec--it seems to have been wheat and preservatives. Has anyone else experienced this?

Yesterday I was STARVING and it was like 6am and nothing was open except gluten filled nasty sh*t like McDonald's. I ended up stopping at ihop and I really tried my best to order something that had the potential to be gluten free but I was so damn hungry I got to the point that I didn't care. I had scrambled eggs, some sirloin tips breakfast steak thing, and hashbrowns. I KNEW the hashbrowns weren't gluten free and places like ihop put flour or pancake mix into their eggs to make them fluffier. I have NOT been right since I ate this meal. I couldn't think straight all day yesterday. I was clumsy, tripping over things, dropping things. I was SO tired. I went to bed as soon as I got home at 5pm and didn't get back up until 7am this morning. Today I have a raging headache (not a migraine thank God) and I have been so out of it all day. My husband and I went to the grocery store and I picked up a jar of fruit jelly and it just fell out of my hands and shattered onto the floor. I damn near burst into tears because this is the stuff that used to happen to me before I was diagnosed with the autoimmune brain disease caused by gluten. I was so mad at myself for being weak and eating something I knew was so dangerous for me. Seriously, starving is better than going through this. I hope this stuff leaves my system soon because I just can't function like this. I was doing so well for so long... I can't believe I did this to myself.

This is how I felt for the entire year I was sick. I felt like this ALL THE TIME. And I'm mad at myself for eating the thing that caused it all. I should know better. This stuff is so dangerous for me. My neurologist warned me that continued exposure to gluten could cause seizures and paralysis and I just got so damn hungry. Lesson learned I guess. It's better to starve
