I made a recent post on Face Book site called The Artist Studio of a photograph that I took for my sister of her daughter. A head shot. Very simple black and white. I have been using photography as my form of expressing art for many years now and feel photography is art. I had a negatavie comment from a woman who claims that photography is not art. She liked my photograph infact complimented it but does not think photography is art. Here are a few of her views about photography "i am a painter, and we are the true artsists because everything we do, WE had to create. a photographer only uses a small machine to capture the image. A painter, or sketcher has to visualize something, and go from there." "i appreciate it. all im saying is that YOU did not create the image. art has to tell a story, it has to have some personal influence, otherwise its not art. you did not dedicate TIME to this, you didnt put any passion into this image, you just simply clicked a button, uploaded it on the computer, i ran it through photoshop, even though YOU did all those things, machines and tools did it for you." She posted a site on facebook of people that do not think photography is art. www.facebook.com/#/group.php?gid=9703766886&rI have had my images hung in galleries and am asked to do photo shoots by many people that appreciate my work. I have never came across anyone who would even make a statement like that. I take time with my subjects if it is a landscape or a person or animal. I have passion for each thing that I shot. Each picture tells a story to not only me but the person looking at it when it is hung in a studio or on a wall in someones home. Karen I know you are a photographer what do you think? I am not sure if it was the particular picture I posted or what that caused her rant. I would love to hear what you girls have to say about it. I tried to explain that art to me is about what makes you happy. Jacob paints and although he is not Van Gogh it comes from his creative heart. I know I am not Ansel Adams but I like to do it and people enjoy my photography too.

Photography is certainly an art! Anyone who thinks otherwise has no true appreciation of what art really is! Which is an expression! While you may not have hand crafted the subjects of your photographs, you were able to capture that subject matter in a way that relays feelings and expressions. To view a photograph is like viewing a piece of time, encapsulated forever in that moment. To say that that is not art is ridiculous! Anyone can paint. To say that painting is considered more of an art because it is a true expression is foolish. I have seen photographs that express so much emotion and true feeling, you walk away from it feeling a sense of that emotion.
I personally have to say I disagree with the comment you received. I think photography is Art.

It damn well is art! You've sent me some lovely images and I think it is art because of the way it has made me feel. Anyone can see something beautiful, but to use the right medium to capture the image, find the right light, focus etc is certainly a skill. My sister is artistic too and thinks of her photography as being art just the same as her painting or sculptures. Tell her to go and get herself something to do. I can't stand people like that. 'You're not a real this/that' Jeeeeez!

Photography is the best form of art. It captures those once in a lifetime moments. Anyone can repaint someone else's art but photography is a true talent, which btw Keri...YOU HAVE!!!

Awww thanks girls! I was not upset about her comment on my photography so much but just the general statement that photography is not art! It really made me upset. Ansel Adams, Annie Leibovitz, Steve McCurry from National Geographic Magazine, Helen Levitt, Ernst Hass Rolleiflex. So many to name I can not even begin to say how offensive that statement was. I am not in the same class as any of those artists but they are all inspiration to me!

Exactly, you've named some amazing artists there! She sounds like someone who has either missed the boat or said these things deliberately to ruffle some feathers.

This is the photograph it is a head shot for my niece. It is very simple. To be honest with you I was not exactly happy with it. My sister feel in love with it tho. I would have like to have gotten it as a outside shot but we were at my family's house for Thanksgiving and she did not want to leave the house it was cold that day.

I also did not have my back drop with me so it is not my best work but it made my sister and her husband happy and that is all that counts!

What a snot! Photography is, in fact, art, and I'm sure you could find many professional photographers that would beg to differ! There is such a thing as a good picture and a bad picture. Composition, lighting, camera settings, etc. all make such a huge difference.
I've come a long way with my photography through the years but still know there's a ton more I could do to improve. During the first wedding I worked, I didn't even know how to use the zoom lens, so I was walking forward and back during the ceremony. The lead photographer (a good friend of mine) gave me a funny look and motioned to me to turn the lens... 60+ weddings later and now we just laugh about it!
She sounds like one of those people that's just throwing stuff out there to get a reaction from you. You have no reason to justify what you're doing. Tell the woman to bugger off, then don't bother giving her the time of day!

All of you girls should go to The Artist's Studio on facebook and leave your opionions LOL! That would be so funny! I will send you the link. I have just never heard anyone say photography is not art. I mean it is fine not to like that particular photograph but she just went into something else by offending a variety of artists.
Oh it takes all kinds to make this world go around!

First off, the woman who made that statement is an elitist b*tch.
Who is she to say that it doesn't take artistic talent to see that something is worth capturing, and that you have to have an eye for how something's going to turn out, before you develop it, or "press the button"? Whatever. Plenty of photographers, in an effort to capture nature the way they WANT to capture it, for example, have had to manipulate their "machines" to do so, since they can't manipulate nature. Or... they have to manipulate the image before it's taken, by directing the human in it on how to move or not move, the lighting in the studio, etc.
She's just full of shyte.
All any artist is doing, fundamentally, is presenting something to the world that they would not have either otherwise seen, or have seen in the way the artist sees it. The medium doesn't matter.

I've never studied 'art'. I don't go in for 'What is art?' or try to define it, I can't.....it's too much of a personal thing. Like perfume.
For all I don't know much about it, or how do describe it, or what period/type of art something is, I know what I like to look at and what I don't. I know what holds my attention and what doesn't. I've been in some famous galleries and have seen some famous pieces and I can just stand and stare at them and get lost in the picture. And I've seem some sh1te that makes me want to walk on by. All I DO know is, I'd FAR rather stand and gaze at a beautifully shot photograph that you can tell has had time and emotion and thought given to it, than say a splodge of all sorts of colours and splashes that makes no sense and says nothing at all but for some reason some idiot would be prepared to spend a ridiculous amount of money on.
And those who are clever enough to develop their own pics, and add spins/effects by doing that are awe-inspiring. That's way more difficult that flicking a brush at a piece of canvas, or stepping in paint and walking on a piece of paper.
Sorry if my views on certain kinds of art have offended anyone, I just find 'abstract' utterly pointless - but I wouldn't say it isn't art, because to some people it is. I love taking pictures, and I love looking at them. That crazy stupid senseless comment has riled me more than I realised.

If anyone is interested in getting in on the debate that is happening on The Artist's Studio page on Facebook here is the link. www.facebook.com/home.php?#/artistsstudio?ref=tsI can not believe that my picture of my niece has created such a stir on that page but it is nice to have people supporting photography as a ART it is and always will be. I have had some interesting comments made since that girl posted that. I have also responded in a manner that is even shocking to me. LOL! I knew I had passion for photography but I guess I did not know how much until I had to defend it! Thanks girls:)

There's both inspiration and technique in any art, it doesn't just happen! You know yourself how much thought, work, lighting, positioning, composition etc etc goes into your photograph. And in the end, art is that which speaks beyond words. It doesn't even have to be pretty (some of the most amazing pieces of art are damn ugly! but so is life). Defy anyone to exclude Karsh, Mappelthorpe, Ansel Adams... long list. It's like arguing with a musician whether dance is really art, because after all the movement just responds to the music, so the music got there first.... Life's too short; people should just enjoy the art that speaks to them, and just recognize how important any form of art is to living.
