can anyone help me? I've always had terribly painful periods, but for the last 3 months or so have started to get wierd symptoms around ovulation. It starts with a discomfort around my right kidney area, plus twingeing pain around the right ovary, lasting a few days around ovulation. At first I thought it was a kidney infection, but the doctor said ''no'' and that it might be PID. Tests prooved negative and now the doc seems to just have brushed it off. I had an ultrasound which came back normal, but I wonder whether it could be endo around my urinary tract/kidney or something? I don't get burning when I urinate. Also, my periods are really, really light and always have been, only lasting 3 days max - but I thought they were usually heavy with endo - or am I wrong? I'm so confused and fed up with wondering and worrying about fertility (we're hoping to have a baby soon). hope someone can enlighten me, thanks

Unless your ovaries are attached to another organ w/ endo or scar tissue, it's probably not endo causing pain at ovulation. It could be something as benign as feeling an egg grow each month. Pain during periods is a characteristic of endo, though. Your periods don't have to be heavy w/ endo. Some women have light periods. Sorry. bottom line, the only way you can tell if you have endo is to have a lap.

ouchy's right, with symptoms you can make a good guess but there's only one way to be sure! I have read that it is very common for women with endometriosis to experience pain and cramps while ovulating, but not in the kidney area. I'm not sure why it would be hurting in the kidney area! Heavy periods are one of the classis symptoms of endometriosis, but every case is different. Just because you don't have all the symptoms doesn't mean you don't have the disease. I think those of you with light periods are very lucky!

Hi Becs, I also sometimes have pain around the either kidney when my areas of pain flare up, so I have just put it down to endo, keeping in mind that the pain can be referred from actual endo sites, and also that endo can grow in very unusual places! A lap is best for a definite answer as ouchy and erzulie have said, so insist and just keep pushing for it! Keep us posted on it, and I'll let you know what I find if I get somewhere with my doctor x

As far as ovulation, though, I think a lot of women feel some type of pinching or ovulated-related pain, even women w/out endo. Unless endo is somehow on your ovaries or something, I can't see of any reason why women w/ endo would have anything remarkable from those women w/out as far as ovulation is concerned. From what I've read a lot of women feel something around ovulation.
There are also a lot of women w/ PCOS and other ovulation-related problems that could also contribute to what might be thought of as "endo-related" ovulation pain, when it could be another situation entirely.

I hope this helps: " Mittelschmerz (German: "middle pain") is a medical term for "ovulation pain" or "midcycle pain". About 20% of women experience mittelschmerz, some every cycle, some intermittently." en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mittelschmerz

Becs I had heavy periods since 13 and my endo symptoms kicked in my mid 20's...I have to say my pain was very heavy in the kidney area in the beginning and then eventually became more centered in my stomach, ovaries, and groin
The kidney stuff would kick in after certain diet and after sex...I rarely get it these days.

Ovarian pain is what made me go in to my doctor again, this time expressly to deal with all of my abdominal pain. I have had horrible periods since I was 15 and no doctor seemed to think it was a problem so I came to believe that also. But about 8 months ago I started to have sharp, almost electric pains in my ovaries during ovulation and menstruation. It turned out through an ultrasound that I had ovarian cysts and a laparoscopy showed them to be endometriomas - chocolate cysts. These were removed during my lap and my right ovary was in a funny position so that was moved as well. My first period after my lap, the ovarian pain was gone (but not the cramps) though the ovary that was moved was/is unhappy in its new position - its taking its time getting used to it. But that is just a tightness, or a stiffness that I imagine is natural after having surgery and acupuncture and stretching is helping that. This period that just ended though was again characterized by intense ovarian pain. Like every 1-2 minutes I would feel it. I hope the endo hasn't grown back there. But I decided not to take the hormone treatment recommended after surgery so I guess its possible...

Hi, I just wanted to say that I have the exact same pain that I believed to be kidney stones or something. I had an ultrasound done as well and it came back clear. The thing is though is that 9 times out of 10, endo won't show up on an ultrasound. I've chalked up the pain to be from the endo, but recently the pain has started down my legs. My knees hurt so much to walk up and down stairs, and I sometimes have a pins and needles feeling in my foot, or a burning sensation that seems to start from the pain in my lower back/abdomen. Can anyone relate to that, or shed some light on it? I'm on my way back to see my specialist on Jan 30th... to book my 4th surgery... yippie skip.

I have had pain around my left ovary for the last 2-3 days and I'm ovulating around now. I haven't had this before, although I do remember getting some pain around ovulation years ago, before I ever knew I had endo. This is only the 2nd ovulation since my lap to free up my ovaries and remove some endo, the 1st was right after the op, so maybe it's only now things are getting moving again? My surgeon said he freed up both ovaries which was stuck down, although there wasn't much scarring or damage.
Anyone else has pain around ovulation or after a lap like this? It's fairly low-level, maybe it's just my ovary getting back into position or just producing an egg (I hope so!)

We actually have a whole thread that fits pain w/ ovulation better than this thread. I didn't realize that it would turn in to a duplicate, so I didn't lock it right away.
Anyway, you could just be having ovultion-type pain from the cysts (Don't freak out...all eggs turn to cysts!) growing, or it could still be a bit of endo. Who knows. A lot of women even feel "ovulation pain" that isn't even ovulation-related.

sorry! I tried to find anywhere it was mentioned but it was tricky to search for. Which thread is the other one?
Thanks!
