Hi everyone. My name is Katie and I am 21 years old. I have not been fully diagnosed with endo yet. I went to the doctor twice he gave me a pap smear and a pelvic exam and put me on birth control pills. (which I dont even want to be on)...Anyways he said it is most likely endometriosis. But I am just confused because he didn't give me an ultrasound. He told me just to take the pills for 3 cycles and come back if I still had pain. The pain has been going on for about 4 months. I get really bad pelvic pain on the right side down into my groin, sometimes the pain is all over on both sides. I feel so tired lately. And lately I have been nauseous(not sure if that has anything to do with it though). I am so worried something is wrong with me. Other than this. And I don't want to wait 3 months to go back and get an ultrasound. It might calm me down more to get one now, but I am just scared. I am so stressed out from thinking about this and worrying if it is something else . It makes me feel like I am going crazy. And the pain is always around my period, but sometimes the pain comes at other times. I have the pain today but my period ended 2 weeks ago. I am sorry if I am rambling, I am just scared and confused what is going on with me.

If it is endometriosis, it can only be diagnosed through a laparoscopy, not through an ultrasound. If I were you I would push to have something done soon and see another doctor if necessary, because you shouldn't be treating a disease you're not even sure you have. You should find out what exactly you have first.

Hi, kate. Erzulie is right, endo can NOT be diagnosed w/ an ultrasound; however, if you are having pain about 2 weeks before your period is due, an ultrasound may be useful in seeing whether or not you have any ovarian cysts, which can cause ovulation pain.
The pain w/ your period does sound common for endometriosis, which, again, is only diagnosed w/ a laparoscopy. I also agree w/ erzulie not treating a disease you don't know you have, even though if your pain happens to improve while on the pill, it paints a more likely scenario that it is endo--even though not everyone's symptoms do improve while on the pill.
I think you should probably try to find another doctor who specializes in gynecologic surgery, especially endometriosis. If you are not cool w/ taking the pill, don't let the doctor force you to do so.
Best wishes, and welcome to the forum. ~ouchy

Oh yah. The PAP test only checks for pre-cancerous cervical cells, so that would have nothing to do w/ endo, either. They can combine certain cultures of STD screenings w/ the PAP, but the PAP iteslf only checks for pre-cancerous cells.
