I have been offered it for PCOS before. And my OBGYN knew I wasn't trying to conceive. I was offered my choice of either Clomid or the diabetic drug Metformin. I opted for Metformin since it was treating the actual problem--blood sugar issues, rather than just the symptom, anovulation.

Let her know about Metformin. It doesn't have all of the risk factors that Clomid does.

Ooooh. I really wouldn't take the clomid. There is a limited number of cycles you can take it. I'm sure you know all about that, though! They probably should have just upped the Metformin if she isn't TTC!

Hi Ladies I was diagnosed with PCOS and Endo last year after a 7 year exploritory stint...trying to confirm i was not mad! I have been on Metformin for 6 months now, and its made a huge difference to my daily life, no more sugar highs, mood swings, finally lost the additional weight that wouldnt move and i feel more centered. I had my first lap last year for endo (stage 3-4 variable), and another one last week for adhesions on my bowel and surrounding areas. Some how my tubes and ovaries are 90% fine (a few small endo spots on the ovaries but nothing hideous and large) I am about to start on Clomid next month (need to recover from surgery first, then its all go...) My metformin has been a godsend and ive had very few side effects... What about Clomid? Are there many side effects? My gynae joked with me today about the prospect of having twins, I would be stoked! That was his idea of a side effect.

I haven't been on Clomid so I can't share anything other than what I've read. According to TCOYF (have you read it yet, by the way?), clomid is prescribed to stimulate egg development in the ovaries. ut, in order for that egg to be fertilized, the sperm needs the proper consistency of cervical fluid in order to make it to the egg, and clomid *can* dry up your cervical fluid making it impossible for the sperm to make it. I'm certainly not saying it's impossible for clomid to work, just want to make sure you know that it's not a magic pill. Do you know if you're ovulating regularly? Do you know what your luteal phase is? I'm certainly not suggesting that knowing the answers to those questions will be the silver bullet, but it's certainly a very good starting point if you're not there yet!
But yay for the metformin! Has that changed your cycles at all? Some women find that they are much more regular after being on that.

I second what Karen said. A friend of mine has pcos, the effect Karen said does happen with clomid(drying of cervical fluid) n its not a miracle drug.. but women do get succes with it.. If you are already on metformin and things are fine inside, you may consider ttc naturally first, and the book mentioned in Karen's signature is a great way to start knowing about ovulation and other things! N hey you can go back in this thread and read more experiences. Also you can check out this link n read clomid experiences z13.invisionfree.com/pcosworldwidesupport/index.php?showforum=2&prune_day=100&sort_by=Z-A&sort_key=last_post&st=15. Its a PCOS support group.. Hope things work out for you, take care!

Wonderful, thanks ladies. Metformin is fantastic, but my cycle is still badly all over the place, anything from 24 days to 34 days. My body seems to have an adversion to the BC pill as well, so ive not been on that for a good 2 years now. Seeing the specialist in a week to sort everything out, getting all the bloods done again prior etc, then sorting out the plan of attack. I had been trying previously for a year with Hubby prior to being diagnosed with Endo and PCOS... Hopefully I have time on my side! Ill try anything.

Went back to my gynocologist a week ago. because my periods have been lasting too long. had 3 periods like clockwork since getting off Lupron in July. cycles exactly 33 days. first period was 6 days. 2nd period lasted nearly 8, and really messed up my wedding night and most of my honeymoon. 3rd period that I got off of, lasted nearly 10 days. I started doing the ovulation kits last month. and didn't get what to appeared to be a postive til cycle day 20. didn't get pregnant that cycle despite my best efforts. as soon as I got off my last period, I started fertility blend which I got from GNC. heard lots of great reviews on it. bought clearblue easy fertility monitor with the smiley faces. so I wouldn't have to keep figuring out those confusing lines. day number 16 of my cycle and still no smiley face. my gyno says he is pretty sure I am ovulating since my periods are like clockwork at 33 days. but he thinks my problem is that I am ovulating too late. so he put me on clomid. if I have no success with the fertility blend and don't get pregnant this cycle, I start clomid on day number 3 of my cycle. really praying for that positive pregnancy test soon.

Let me clarify a few things for you and others that may read this. Clomid is prescribed when women have problems ovulating. Based on your last few cycles, you've stated you are ovulating around day 20. Day 20 is not considered 'late' and having a 33 day cycle is not considered 'long'. Ovulating on day 14 and having a cycle that is 28 days long is the average, and slight variations that are consistent from month to month does not mean you have irregular cycles.
In order to get pregnant, it doesn't matter when in your cycle you ovulate. What matters is that you do ovulate, and how many days you have in between ovulation and your period starting (your luteal phase). The ideal luteal phase for someone trying to get pregnant is around 12-14 days. Based on what you stated, you have an idea luteal phase. I'm not sure why your doctor would prescribe clomid.
Be aware that clomid has side effects. It can change your cervical fluid, making it more difficult for sperm to make it's journey to the egg. In addition,if I recall correctly, clomid should be used very cautiously for women with endometriosis as it can increase estrogen levels, which, in turn, can fuel endo growth.
I understand there may be some circumstances where women with endo may need to rely on clomid for a short period of time to ovulate properly in order to get pregnant, but it shouldn't be considered casually. Please, do your research and make sure you're taking it because you actually need it and because the benefits outweigh the risks.
(I'm moving this to the existing clomid thread. Please read through it for more info.)

I'm astounded your doc would prescriber clomid so soon after you start trying! I agree with everything Karen says. You really need to give your body a bit more time. I think you're expecting too much too soon.

I'm actually quite surprised that your doctor prescribed clomid too. I know you feel like you are running out of time and are in a huge rush to try and get pregnant but doctors don't typically give clomid this early in the process of trying to conceive. Also you had such a severe and extreme case of endometriosis, I'm really surprised that your doctor would give a drug that actually FUELS endo to grow! That's kinda scary! Did your doctor discuss this with you???

He knows about my endo. He is the one who treated me. He has been in practice over 30 years. I bought clear blue ovulation kit. With the smiley face. Had my period on jan 2nd. Lasted nearly 10 days. It is now jan 20th and still no smiley face. Just because my cycles been regular til the day doesnt mean I am ovulating. I will be 36 at the end of June and guess he doesn't want to waste any time. I already filled the prescription for clomid. If no pregnancy off the fertility blend this month, will try the clomid. With my cycles being 33 days, I due for my period on feb 4th.
