Zuzana -- if you have a couple months to adjust you should be fine! Or -- if you're one of those that doesn't do well with it -- you'll have time to get it removed!
As for the cramping -- I know exactly what you mean -- heck yeah -- I'm always cramping so it didn't bother me! I'm sure with someone who didn't have endo -- they would freak out!!!!
But -- so far so good! I will be so happy if this helps my pain and reduces the heavy periods!!! My dr only suggested it a few days before I had my lap -- so I didn't have a ton of time to read a bunch of stuff about it! Of course -- when I was off work recovering from my lap I read a bunch of people's stories all over the web & got so scared! But -- I'm glad at this point that I'm not having any issues! I haven't had any children so I think my uterus was a little peeved that there was something in it -- but I think it may have accepted it's roomie by now!

Hi Karen - for sure keep me posted on your experience with Mirena. I have another dilema. My doctor wants me to have a lap and have the Mirena put in at the same time, but the waiting list around here is really long and I dont' want to wait for lets say three months until I have the lap. I have an appointment to see my dr. for next tuesday. I want to see if she would be willing to go ahead with the Mirena before the lap. Wish me luck.

Hi, zoe. I think cherry is one of the few members, if not the only one, who has been on prostap. To my knowledge, she has never had an IUD.

Hiya Zoe, ouchy got it exactly right I was on Prostap 3, which is the one they inject every 3 months and I've not ever had an IUD though my new gynae is asking me to have a mirena fitted at my 2nd lap. However, I did come off Yasmin the day before my first injection, and ended up with a 6 week long bleed. I think it was all to do with my hormones being thrown out of whack, going from a pseudo-pregnancy to a mini menopause, and it may be what is causing your prolonged bleed now. I am still iffy about having a mirena fitted xx

Hi there,
I would not get the IUD in if i were you. I had it and i got pelvic inflammatory disease from it, and it makes your pain way worse, and it is hard to find an antibiotic to cure it. I ended up in the hospital time after time, being put on antibiotics through IV, and on antibiotics at home and they don't really work. I was in and out of hospital for about three years before they found on that would work. I would never wish the IUD on anyone. Its a chance you will take getting PID.

You can easily get PID without having an IUD, too (STD's that go untreated); however, the IUD slightly raises the risk by giving the bacteria a nice little string to climb up the reproductive tract to the uterus and ultimately the tubes, especially when you're not in a monogamous relationship and might be exposed to STD's. PID is usually caused by either chlamydia or gonorrhea, of which there can be extremely resistant Asian strains, so if this is a concern, what Joanne is talking about does make sense. But if you are in an infection-free, monogamous relationship, the risk drops significantly, especially with the newer IUD's, from what I have read.

Joanne's post, edited to include only relative info.My pelvic inflammatory was from the kind of IUD they had in years ago. I was told it is because there was copper in the IUD. Mine was not contracted from any STD's, I have been married for 25 years, and monoginous. Joanne Dreamquest

You're probably referring to the "Dalkon Shield." The copper in the IUD's (still the same principle today) actually increases the effectiveness as a contraceptive device. Some women are allergic to the copper, but the copper itself does not cause PID. PID was and is still caused by some type of bacterial invader from the vagina that infects the normally sterile uterus and fallopian tubes. The IUD you're most likely talking about had a string that would "wick" bacteria from the vagina up into the uterus, giving it free-range on into the tubes, where PID can result. Here is a really good write-up no the Dalkon Shield that explains it in more detail. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dalkon_Shield

Now, back on to the topic of today's IUD's. That old IUD was banned due to increased PID risks.

Hi, dont really know where to post this one so i thought as i posted about having my mirena removed and then loads of bleeding i thought i would post here. On monday i took my 2 kids the the local supermarket to get a new prescription beacuse i was in alot of pain, when suddeny i started to feel really dizzy, so i said to my eldest boy whos 4 (and taking a great interest in all the toys) i need to go and sit down.......... my fingers then went all tingly my eyes rolling....... next thing i knew i was being taped on the back and somebody shouting can you here me. I had compleatly blacked out To cut a long story short they called the ambulance which took my to hospital. They ran a few tests and basically just said that it was because of the blood loss and the pain im in, i didnt have a scan or anything like that. So at the end of it i really dont konw what coused the black out and i dont really think they did!!!!! This is the first time i have ever done this and it really scared me especially as i was on my own with 2 small kids. I know by reading other threads that some of you have fainted in the past, so can anybody give any advise as im scared it will happen again. The hospital did prescribe me some MORE tablets to take to try and stop the bleeding. sorry this is so long. worried zoe

Humm. I don't really know where to put this post, either. I'll start a new thread for passing out from blood loss/pain, and copy/paste there, and I'll put a link up to the new thread. I think it's worth mentioning in the IUD thread bc your bleeding started as a result, but the passing out from blood loss is now from bleeding or something. Anyway, here is the new "Passing Out from Blood Loss or Pain" thread. cjlevett.proboards33.com/index.cgi?action=display&board=related&thread=1180471540
