The IUD being out of place won't cause bleeding. I had the paragard and my body expelled it. I didn't know till dr told me it was almost out. I had pain and cramping but no bleeding with that. It may be out of position. I would have the ultrasound, if its in the correct position give it a few more days. This may just be endo period pain that was worse this month then normal, its hard to say.

Hey ladies! I got my Mirena in last Friday when I was already out for my lap -- THANK GOD!!! However, the last 3 days, I have been waking up in the middle of the night with the worst cramps which are continuing all day! I have to take 2 vicodin at a time to deal with them. They seem some better today -- but what the??? I also read that you can have bad cramps for up to 2 weeks so I'm going to try and hang in there! I seriously think my body is trying to expel it! It does NOT want it in there! I think it will settle down -- but if this keeps up, I am getting an ultrasound to see where it is and if it's trying to get out! I hope you are feeling better and I hope this pain stops soon for both of us!!! It's ridiculous! My dr said it might be crampy for a couple weeks but not too bad -- then I hear from other people how bad it is? What to believe?

It may be post lap pain, I had ALOT of pain post lap. I didn't have my mirena put in at the same time. I felt like a truck was dragging me down the street for at least 2 weeks post lap so it might e there.

Yeah it could be just endo pain, my husband actually commented at one point that im always really bad during my period, how do i know its not just a little worse than normal with the mirena, ill admit he has a point.
Im also always at my worst with spotting, it hurts for some reason more than heavy bleeding and i dont know why, so yeah could be just that.
I talk to my specialist wed, so if no better then ill see what he says, and yeah if no better by the end of the week, ill get the position checked, certainly cant go on like this.
Am sorry your also in pain Karen. Hugs.
I had a bad day this morning, must be getting to me, got really depressed and cried and cried, poor hubby copped it, gets hard to take all this day in and day out. The worst of it is my dads really sick, and i cant visit him coz im too unwell to get in a car.
But im hanging in there, thanks for all your support here too, its helping me get through this.

It's been 1 week since insertion and I don't want to jinx it -- but NO CRAMP PAIN since yesterday morning!!!! Happy girl!!!!! I'm having the "spotting" -- it's not really spotting -- it's brownish & not really enough for a pad -- but enough to ruin your undies! And whatever it is -- has some sort of ESP -- no spotting for hours so I take the pad off (itchy!!) and wouldn't you know -- not 5 minutes later...plop....SPOTTING!!!! Put a new pad on -- nothing for hours! This Mirena is just testing me -- I know it!!!!! Does anyone have ANY idea how long this is going to go on? My dr said it could be like that for 3 months -- yikes!!!! Anyone have any ideas to deal with it? I swear -- I get diaper rash from pads after about a week, and tampons might be too much for this "flow" -- and I have the skill of dislodging them when I pee.....GRRRR!!!! KB -- why don't you go get an ultrasound? ?? It can't hurt!!! My family dr said he would line one up for me if the cramping continued or got worse -- just in case!!!! He said not having heavy bleeding is not a sign that it has dislodged! I had previous surgery on my cervix -- cancer and had about 60% of it removed -- so my dr said there's a good chance that it will dislodge -- great!!! She said to "watch for it" -- hey, that thing was so expensive -- if it comes out, I'm keeping it!!!! I could probably use it as a down payment for new living room furniture! Hang in there -- I know it's so weird....and so unknown! Seems like the dr and manufacturer say 1 thing & others say something else! But -- mine went away for 24 hours now -- so maybe, maybe yours will too!!!! If they aren't gone by late morning -- please go get it checked!!!! Let me know how it goes!!!!! I"m keeping my fingers crossed for you!!!!!!!

Oh 2 more things!
First -- my dr gave me vicodin to take for the cramps (actually had the choice between percocet & vicodin)....now they never given me strong meds like that for cramps -- so they must know the cramps can be bad!!!! Also -- I tried the tramadol -- 2 every 4 hours -- didn't take the edge off -- even mixed with ibuprofen -- nothing. I think the vicodin has helped -- well, with the last round of cramps for sure!
Second -- I have been reading so many things on the internet about women complaining about weight gain with mirena. I know, I know...I shouldn't believe everything I read -- and it's so easy to blame weight gain on anything! I am SLOWLY trying to lose about 20 pounds....only 12 more to go -- and am afraid that I may have change tactics if this weight gain from mirena is going to be a problem.....anyone have an issue with this?
Thank you so much!!!!!

And whatever it is -- has some sort of ESP Black undies are the answer!! and tampons might be too much for this "flow" I was told to avoid tampons after a lap.

The tramadol hasnt worked on its own for this, i need to take it with 2 panadeine, i find 1 tramadol with panadeine every 4 or 5 hours is the most effective in keeping it tolerable, and yes even with that still have pain.
Ive had alot of training now to deal with pain so am coping, but yeah probs a good idea to get the ultrasound, ill ring the clinic tomorrow and see when i can get in.
I started the day slightly better, and lasted 2 hrs without drugs, so marginal improvement, or at least a short respite.
Im willing to hang in there for the possibility of it working, a few weeks of pain is nothing if it means being better, but not confident on it at the moment.
Fingers crossed. Im glad your pains gone Karen, hope you stay well.
Im just using liners for the spotting, havent had any rashes or probs doing that so far but look forward to no longer needing that. Mines the same, just brown gunk and not really enough for a pad, but i keep the liners on coz it gets a little more occasionally.

Karen: Everyone I knew who got the depo shot complained about weight gain (one woman I knew gained almost 100lbs...of course, that had nothing to do with the deep fried food she downs every day!). I LOST weight with the shot, as did my sister. And since the Mirena is localized hormones, it SHOULDN'T cause much in the way of side effects like weight gain.
I hope your pain stays away!
kb: I'm glad the pain is diminished! I hope it stays away, too!

I have a question. I've never researched this. How do the hormones w/ IUD stay localized? I know you can take birth control pills vaginally and they make it through your system. Why is putting hormones directly in the uterus different? What keeps them localized?

From what ive read it doesnt stay localised, but because its continuous and going directly to where its needed it only needs to be low dose. Some will make it into the system but its only meant to be 1/7 of that with birth control pills.
From what ive read from official sites side effects like weight gain are uncommon and studies have shown that the rate of weight gain for women is no higher than the general population. There are of course many testamonials that say they have had side effects, but i guess only those who have had probs will go to the effort to post.
I personally am already feeling more hormonal than normal, but ive also gone off the vitex, after talking to a herbalist though, and considering the gyno who put it in thinks it would be safe, and considering women can have estrogen therapy with the mirena im going to recommence it, just waiting for some to arrive that i ordered (needed some gluten free, have decided to trial the gluten free diet for 3 mths).
Im no better today really, felt marginally better when i got up the same as yesterday, enough that i could wait an hour before i took drugs but feel just as bad as always now.
I was too unwell today to consider ringing anyone, so i still havent booked in to have the placement checked, am regretting that now but its easy to put jobs off when im really sick.

I just lost 30 lbs since January and I've had my IUD for a little over a year. I didn't have trouble losing it I just had to actual buckle down and do it.
I always thought spotting hurt way more than bleeding. My periods were always just spotting but intensely painful. Ifs my theory (take it for what it is) that the uterus cramps harder when nothing is happening. It is working hard to get something going. If you were bleeding it wouldn't have to keep contracting.
I only had one period (10 days of spotting) and then not again. I've had random spots over the year but nothing that even ruins underwear. I used pantyliners instead of pads. They make all kinds so some are softer and less irritating then others.
Good luck I hope the pain goes away. It really has been the biggest relief for me having no period since Feb 2006.

Thanks Janet, your posts are always so helpful to me, thank you so much. Hugs Ive thought the same thing bout spotting, agree with your theory. Ive talked to my specialist today, my biopsy results were normal, but hes not reading much into it coz he doesnt think he got enough for an accurate test. Ive got to just ride out the pain, he said i am unlikely to see any results for 3mths, that the pain shouldnt be that severe but if it is to get stronger pain relief. He's told me to get an ultrasound to check the position, he says that most women dont have the pain for long so it shouldnt take 3mths to settle. Im losing faith, its been 10days now i think and have had no improvement. I max out the drug i can take, last night i took too much and it made my head dizzy and made me feel sick, yet i was still in pain. I see my gp friday so will ask for stronger pain relief and an ultrasound referral. As far as herbs go he told me nothing would interfere and to continue anything that works. He suspects i have residual endometriosis that was missed on my last lap, or alternately that i have it in my muscle fibres (adenomyosis), which he said is really hard to diagnose and cannot be seen on a lap. So when i said so surgery really wont be of any use to me, he said now your asking for a black and white answer and there isnt one. I can only speculate whats going on and its a very poorly understood area when its difficult to see. Ive been told to be patient with the mirena and if it doesnt work will go from there, said the next reasonable step is surgery. I dont want surgery so ill ride this out, and demand stronger pain relief. Im a little annoyed coz when i told the specialist how much pain i was in, he said well it can cause discomfort, especially if uve had no children, but wouldnt acknowledge it could cause this level of pain. Maybe my husbands right, maybe its only slightly increased it, but its been enough to push it to what i cant handle, so i guess i need to build up my tolerance levels, lol, or accept the need for regular pain relief. Sorry for the long post, but still have no answers, and still feel lost. On the bright side, the doc has agreed to write a letter to help me try and get the disability pension, once ive got the letter ill get my case reviewed, very hard not earning money.
