The good news is it is completely reversible, you don't like it have it removed. I've never known anyone that bled continuously, not to say it doesn't happen. but all the folks I know that have it might've still had their period for up to 6 months but it wasn't continous.

Thanks Janet, thats really reassuring actually.
I have decided to go ahead with the Mirena, have to try something and seems a very good option. I really like that it can be so easily removed if i dont like it.

Hey kb, my dr wants to try the mirena on me to help out with pain & flow issues because I can't do most hormones in the doses they are presented!!!! She wants to put it in on Friday! I wasn't sure at all -- but she promised -- even after a week, if I'm not happy, she'll take it out! But -- she did say it can take 3 to 6 months for you to get totally used to it, so I will attempt to stick it out that long!
Hey -- we can compare notes!!! That should be fun!

LOL, yeah thats a good idea actually Karen, forgetting the benefit it would be for us, for others they can then read through our experiences to help them decide.
Am trying to get in contact with my gyno, coz i want to get it put in soon, my period id due in a few days, so if i wait for the biopsy its a whole month before it can be put in and i dont want to wait that long. So want his go ahead so i can organise that. He's not putting it in, gave me the script and told me i can get it done anywhere so i wont have to travel back to sydney for it.

That's excellent!!! I'm lucky as I'm having it put in while I'm out for my lap -- so I wonder if I'll even know it's there for a while! HA! I have heard people either love it or hate it -- I hope that it works for me!!! It might be tough for the first few months -- but we can do it! A gal at work had one for 2 years and she loved it!!! She said she didn't bleed continuously for the the first several months -- she might bleed a day, then spot for a few days, then bleed for a day -- she didn't like that part becuase it was unpredictable & seemed to always know when she was stuck in a long meeting, or in traffic, or had forgotten a pad or tampon!!! HA!!!
But -- I've read more and more stuff about how it reduces bleeding and pain -- and any reduction in pain is WONDERFUL!!!!
How soon could you have it put in? If they can get you set right away that is. If not -- you hafta wait til your next period -- right?

Well, just got my mirena put in this afternoon. Been in just a short few hours.
They sedated me and the staff at the clinic were wonderful, so caring.
Have had alot of pain after, but no worse than what my worst period pain can get to on its own.
Have had sedation drugs, indocid suppository, 2 panadol, and 2 tramadol after and still have quite a bit of pain. I feel real dopey at the moment so the pains in the background at the moment despite its severity.
So fingers crossed that it works.
Managed to find out from the gyno who inserted it that its unlikely herbs will be a problem with it coz its not systemic, but to check with a herbalist first. She said supplements are absolutely fine.

Good to hear it went well, kb!
I have to say, I'm really nervous about getting the Mirena inserted. I had an endometrial biopsy a year ago that hurt like crazy! I nearly threw up and passed out...so I'm hoping the Mirena won't be as bad!
I like that the hormones in it are localized, and won't affect anything except the uterine lining. I can't take systemic hormones because of my migraines.
I've read that the pain from the Mirena can last from a couple weeks to a couple months, then it's pain free. I'm hoping for the "couple weeks".
Keep us updated, kb!

Well day 1 update:
My god, this thing is absolute hell so far, i couldnt get out of bed for hours today, not sleeping, the pain was just so bad i couldnt move.
I thought i might throw up, couldnt eat, had a massive migraine. Have managed after most of the day now to get it all under control enough that i can semi function but still cant eat.
I will say the pain is no worse than my absolute worst period pain, am lucky to have strong drugs on hand but they didnt work for migraine, surprisingly with the tramadol on board a couple of panadol and some lavender oil on temples (alota oil actually) has settled the migraine.
I dont know if the migraine would have been here anyway, i do get menstrual migraines so it could be just that, lets hope, ill give it a few weeks i suppose to be sure, but i cant handle migraines.
I was fortunate i think to have taken the herbs for a few months before this, coz my period now is so much lighter than it once was, although pain remains the same. So it may (empahsis on may) help the mirena work quicker.
Fingers crossed this doesnt last, its only day 1 so ill hope for the best. I was wiped out yesterday after having it inserted, the sedation given must be strong, slept on and off all night on the lounge and went to bed real early.
Am so glad i had this done under sedation, my advice to anyone out there is to shop around and find a clinic that does this, its well worth it.

Wow, mine hurt like a mother to put it in, but thats cause it took 20 (eta: accidentally typed 2 the first time, meant 20) mins with my cervix not cooperating and my tilted uterus made it hard to get in right place. Then I took some motrin and felt a little yucky rest of that night. The next day I was back to normal. I've not known anyone that had pain from the insertion more than just insertion day. I hope it gets better. Maybe it was a difficult insertion and it made it more painful.

*hugs* kb! I hope you feel better soon! Keep us updated!
My GP told me she has inserted a number of Mirenas, and none of her patients seemed to have extreme pain. But she also told me it will hurt more because of the endo. Yippee.

Well still in loads of pain and its day 3, have to take tramadol and panadeine together to keep it tolerable, but still cant do anything, more debilitated than ever.
I rang the clinic today and spoke to a doc, to see if this is normal, she said this level of pain is definitely not normal, told me all i can do is have it removed.
So i asked if it will settle, she said it should (thats not a guarantee), but said to keep doing what im doing and if i cant take it have it removed.
So how long do i put up with this? I dont know what to do now, i can take alot of pain, but this level constantly is unbearable. The migraine has gone, and im only spotting, but the pain is still severe, what do i do???
I guess i can try and hold out till the 2nd, when i speak to my specialist, dont know, if no better tomorrow might ring him and see what he says.
How typical, have to be one of those unusual women that react badly to it, boooo, any wonder i gave up in the past and went down the herbal route.
Any suggestions on what to do would be great, my brain is not functioning well with this pain so im lost.

I've read that a lot of women have pain for about a week to two weeks after having it inserted. But if it's to the point you can't bear it, get it taken out! Can you get an ultrasound to make sure it's in correctly?

Yeah i can get an ultrasound, but ive only got spotting, so its unlikely its out of position. I just think my uterus isnt a fan of it being there.
I am actually much better today, have had a few hours where the pain is just normal pain, but it seems now it has come back again so have had to go back to the drugs yet again, just waiting for them to kick in.
But is promising that it was ok for a few hours, maybe its starting to settle in, lets hope.
I spoke to a herbalist today who said that herbs should be fine with the mirena, and should not interfere with it in anyway.
So ive recommenced all my herbs and supplements as was taking previously, actually restarted the black cohosh last night and today woke up better, interesting isnt it, could be coincidence i suppose.
Thanks for that Irishmuse, that actually does make me feel better, i wont worry so much knowing that.
