Hiya, how are everyone's experiences with taking this and under what circumstances? I was given some today by my locum. I want to punch him in the face cos when he says I've got drive he is just being patronising and I'm not flattered at all cos anyone would be like this if they had been through what I've been through. Last time I saw him he advised I try some paracetamol ( I am voltarol strength meds right now) so the mefenamic acid is a step up. However when I asked him about combining it with my current NSAID, cos he is too lazy to actually look it up and give me a real answer, he skirted around it and sorta said no, even though the gynae I saw last month advised me to try my current pain meds together with mef acid/ponstan. I asked the pharmacist if there was any problem with taking mef acid with NSAIDS, and he said no so I will try that. The pain I have is not one where I'll waste time seeing if the mef acid that never worked before will work now! Sorry I'm in a foul mood I've had an awful period and even though it's ending I'm in a lot of pain and I didn't want the doc to even touch me so I didn't tell him xx

Hi Cherry,
I have been taking ponstan with co-codomol (the highest strength I think its 30g maybe, not sure), but this was what my Doc prescribed a few years back.
When my pain is really bad I find that these work for a while.
It's really annoying when Doc's don't take time with their patients, sometimes it feels that you've no longer put your bum on the seat and their showing you the door.

Hi Cherry I have always been told that you CANNOT take mef acid with ibuprofen but you can take codeine and paracetomol at the same time. However my gynae who is an expert in endo says that he went to a convention last year where it was decided that mef acid is no more effective than simple ibuprofen for endo pain. I take 3x200mg ibuprofen with 60mg codeine phosphate at the onset of pain then 2x200mg ibuprofen and 60mg codeine phosphate after 4 hours then every 4 hours as needed - i do feel like i rattle with all the pills sometimes but it does help!

Hi ladies thanks for the input, I erred on the side of caution and didn't take anything else with this mefenamic acid/ponstan/ponstel. I have tried it cos this month I'm having a fair bit of post menstrual pain, esp down my left leg. And I agree, it's been a waste of £7 on a prescription. I'm too angry to even speak to that doctor now I wish my GP would get better and come back. This locum offered me paracetamol last time as well! He has to be joking. Like he either thinks I'm exaggerating or has a stupid idea that I've exhausted my available options lets start her on generic stuff that won't work. I should have had m&ms instead, they're cheaper and probably woulda worked better cos I get the chocolate and a little sugar rush! 'Excuse me doc but if you read my notes, you'd see paracetamol makes me sick, does bugger all and I have to take voltarol type NSAIDs, so please don't insult me with this rubbish.' Honestly it's like I'm getting all my PMT now cos my blood boils to think of him, this doc is a pain in the bum. And I mean endo style stabbing in the bum pains, that's how irritating he is! Plus he's young and has a good 40 years to become more arrogant and idiotic... xx

I was given this by my GYN yesterday and it did absolutely NOTHING for me. In fact, I was in alot of pain and couldn't take anything else because I had taken this stuff. Over the counter meds work way better. I wish I had the money back I paid for this prescription.

I have taken Menfenamic acid. Does nothing. I have taken so many things like Shona said, its annoying when you think of the amount of money you spend on things that dont really work. I have had doctors try all different forms of NSAIDS... and my tolerance to alot of meds is getting higher. Now I can take T3, or Fioricet, or even Percocet and not get sleepy or feel drugged. It takes the larger part of the pain away but I still often feel pain. I just want to have a fairly pain free life.. as we all do. I just dont understand why they cant figure out how to cure this disease.

I've also tried Menefamic Acid along with another one called Trans something acid. I was told it would lighten my periods and help with the pain aswell. I was not given any other pain killer and i must admit that i have not being taking it as i should have. But the one month i did take it as prescribed it DID HELP !!! I have had enough of all these pills. I've popped enough in my mouth to last me a life time now.

I feel the same..and the worst thing is that nearly all the med we take has one side effect or another. So trying to fix one thing brings up another. I suffer with and irritable bladder along with re-current UTI's and have to take med for these too

I was being treated for recurrent ones even though they were never finding bacteria. It would up being referred vaginal pain that caused it to hurt when I would pee!

I'm glad they make sure that's what it is before giving you the meds! I had the exact same symptoms minus the bacteria.
