Hi ladies,
I know this is a bit off topic, but I noticed a couple days ago that I had this soft lump on the upper labia majora, not on the lips, but next to it on the left side. After asking my Mother-in-law and searching online, I believe this is what they call the sebaceous gland. It is not really painful, only if I start touching it then it gets a little aggravated. Anyone else have this and what could I do for it to help it go down? Thanks in advance for any replies.

Hi there! I'd keep an eye on it to make sure it doesn't get bigger because those glands can get infected and cause an abscess. They can just go away on their own but if it gets bigger or gets painful then you really should see your doctor.

My thought is an ingrown hair or a boil. I get ingrown hairs quite often and they can swell up to a pretty good size lump – I drain them all to let the puss and hair out and then just treat with tea tree oil. I think I get them from waxing and from working out/sweat. My best suggestion is to put a hot towel on the area for a minute or two and try to squeeze it or use a lancet that is sterile to drain it. I guess if it doesn’t drain, then see a doctor.

I wouldn't recommend lancing it without knowing exactly what it is. If a warm compress doesn't do anything, you may need to see a doctor. I have a gland that gets clogged constantly (not an ingrown hair) that my doctor may have to eventually drain, and its not the sort of thing to do at home. Mine is in a different spot, though.

I occasionally get cysts there. I wouldn't dream of trying too hard to squeeze it on my own, if it gets at all painful please make an appointment to get it looked at!

OMG DON'T LANCE IT. That's like asking for an infection. I know we can be tempted to "pop" things but if you open a wound down in an area that's warm and moist that's prime environment for an infection. I think warm compresses are a good idea or you can do the "wait and watch" approach. A lot of these will resolve themselves. If it gets worse or painful then going to see your doctor would be a good next option. Just DON'T POP IT.

I can see both sides to the story, perhaps popping it isn't such a hot idea but for my situations, it has worked - too many trips to the waxing lady when I have gotten them and it's always an ingrown so now I just do it myself - the hot towel will work, if it's going to burst open and drain, it will do it on it's own with the hot towel ( the heat will also bring it to a head ).

Ingrown hair is one thing, but a cyst is another. Question for you - does it feel like a lump under your skin, kind of like a pea or a kidney bean? Is it at about 2:00 or 3:00 o'clock (or 9:00 or 10:00) in relation to your vag? I ask because that's how my doctor described what I have - a bartholin cyst. Essentially, the duct got blocked and the lump under my skin a little ways away is the backed-up fluid. www.mayoclinic.com/health/bartholin-cyst/DS00667 She suggested a warm bath or warm compress with a bit of massage to help the fluid drain.

Ingrown hair is one thing, but a cyst is another. Yeah I totally agree. Since none of us know what this is it's best not to do anything drastic until you speak to a doctor but hopefully it will go away on its own. How does it look today? Is it getting better?

Hi ladies, Thanks for all the replies, I appreciate it. It is still there. I have been putting like a warm compress on it a couple times a day. It is not hard at all, it is like the size of maybe a pea, but not hard really. It is not located anywhere near the vaginal opening. It is high up kind of adjacent to the clitoris, mabe a tad lower but next to the labia majora, but not on the lip at all, just on the skin next to it. It does not really hurt to much, I mean maybe a little after I go touching it. I did notice it itched a little, but not all the time. I made an appt. to just see the gyne today so she can look at it. I will say I am not a fan of going to gyne, I am in such fear of getting UTI's. I have IC and also am very prone to bladder infections and am always leary of anyone going near me down there, especially doctors as you hear of so much bacteria and germs lurk around the doctors office. I am not sure what this is, first time I have had something like this. If it is a cyst can those go away on their own? I surely do not want ANYONE cutting on me down there. I am just to prone to infections and am unable to take antibitoics really due to having bad reactions. I am on a low dose antibiotic now, have been for the last three years because I got a UTI that would not leave for 6 months. My doctor just had me stay on this low dose to prevent as many UTI's as I can. Do you think it is a good idea to go to the gyne, and do you think I will get a UTI? I hope she does not want to lance it or anything, I do not think it would be a good idea right now as my period is due in a couple days. I also have to take a shower every day and wash down there just to stay clean( my doctor told me it is important to shower down there everyday since I get UTI's easily). What do you ladies think?

Bit hard to say, wait and see what your gynae says. Careful how you wash - UTI's could come about I guess if you're using strongly scented washes which can then upset the bacterial harmony in your privates - casing bacterial vaginosis (BV). If it's not causing you massive pain there's a good chance she'll want to leave it alone and see if it resolves by itself.

I've gotten these occasionally and always blame my bike seat. Generally if I wait it will go down, but can take a couple of weeks. Hope the gyn has some answers!

Hey Ladies.
Well, I went to the gyne and she said it looked like a blood vessel. She did not seem concerned. Maybe it got irritated and swelled a little. It has went down some, still itches a little though, but nothing bad. I am just happy it was no biggie. Thanks again for all the replies and support ladies!!
