Hi, everyone. I bought some psyllium husk (type of fiber), and it reallllllllllllllllly helps! I bought mine in a big bag at a health food store, but I think you can buy it at wal-mart in the laxative/fiber section. I just mix a tea-sp-oon (had to hyphenate and incorrectly, because ...that word isn't allowed?!!!!) in some diluted orange juice and drink it. Bowel movements are sooo much less painful. Psyllium husk is a stool bulker and laxative. But it basically just makes your stool how it is supposed to be. If your stool is too loose, it bulks it. If you get constipated, it works as a laxative w/out causing diarrhea. My gastrointerologist told me to take this, but I didn't buy it until a few days ago. It's great! Thought I'd let everyone know about this great remedy!

Okay, so now I am having my withdrawl bleed from the continuous birth control pills, and this is the first time I have had bleeding while taking fiber, and I have had no IBS pain during BM's!!! Nothing. No stabbing, no cramping, nothing! Everything just flows smoothly

Ouchy,
What were your BM pains/symptoms like before you started taking the psyllium husk? Did you have infrequent/irregular BMs or loose/hard stools? How much fiber did you consume before the supplements? Sorry, it's a gross question, but I hope you don't mind answering.
The reason I ask is because I'm trying to decide whether I want to start taking the psyllium (I think you suggested it to me recently??) I have 2 to 3 BMs per day as it is, and they are either loose or average consistency. I do have some pain during menstrual BMs. Just trying to figure out if I need a fiber supplement in addition to everything else I'm taking.
Thanks

Hi, Meka. Before I started taking the psyllium husk, I had irregular stools--sometimes several times a day, mostly diarrhea or very loose. Before taking the psyllium husk, I ate a healthy diet with plenty of fruit, lettuce, and broccoli. I didn't eat a lot of bread, but when I did, I made sure it was whole-grain. I made sure not to eat anything high in fat, because that would put me into a pain out of this world (and also give me diarrhea from hell).
My pain symptoms were worse during my period, and it felt almost as if a sharp knife would stab me when the stool would pass through what I am guessing to be my sigmoid colon (I had a sigmoidoscopy, and the area felt the same). After passing that certain point, the sharp knife-stab would turn more to a blunt stab and slowly disapate after the bowel movement. That is about the best way I can describe it.
My gastro recommended it to me, and I think it is the best advice, besides to start taking black cohosh, that anyone has ever given me!

I also noticed that with taking the psyllium husk regularly, I have less gas. Oh! I also take live acidophilus capsules to maintain healthy digestive flora.

I've purchased the psyllium husk. The package said that the powder expands a lot (so much that it can cause choking if not consumed with adequate liquid-- at least 8 ounces). That shouldn't be a problem for me. But I am wondering if it fills you up. I don't want to take it before eating if that's the case, because I get full too quickly and I need to eat more. I'm definitely looking forward to having less gas!

Hi! Awesome about the husk. I've read that it can cause choking, too, but I've never experienced that. You may actually notice an increase in gas over the next few days after you begin taking the fiber, but it should go away. Also, if you want to reduce it and help your digestive and intestinal tract, you can purchase acidophilus capsules--the good bacteria your gut needs

I am going to start GNC's colon care pills. Its psyllium husk, acidophilus and 2 other fibers. The problem is it has to be refrigerated and you take it after a meal, lunch makes the most sense being that I eat it everyday, but I don't want to keep them in work refrigerator :lol

Ah. Yah. You have to refrigerate them to keep the acidophilus bacteria alive. That bites, doesn't, it?! Let us all know how it works for you, though!

Do you think I could take it at night and be ok, or does it help to stimulate a bowel movment? I'm not sure how it works so I'm not sure when to take it.
Otherwise hopefully it will be ok to put an unmarked container or meds in the work fridge cause I'm not putting a giant bottle with "Colon Care" on it in the work fridge :lol
