There are lots of different types of nursing positions! A good friend of mine was a school nurse for a while, which meant she even got the summers off. She had to float between several schools but it was a good position for her to start out in. You could be in surgery, which typically has set hours, can work only a few days a week, can work in a clinic, nursing home, etc. There are lots of options!

I love Emergency Medicine and I love the work in the ER, I also love working on Acute Care and surgery, I want to cross train in all the areas of the hospital. ICU is always desperate for more people. Unfortunately in our area hospitals that's 12 hour shifts. I love night shift too, the whole sneaking through the hospital and taking care of people and getting them comfortable, I actually sleep fine in the day so its not a problem for me. (I just love the job!) MaverickRose, I am working Per diem already so its not full time. We have school loans to help with some of the money issues so "to work, or not to work" is some what a question of what I can handle. I have gotten used to having that little bit of extra. I rather like it! I love that I have a fellow endo girl going through this. The "distraction from the pain" is HUGE. When I wasn't working things were much worse, and I was so miserable. When I get discouraged I remember how much worse I felt before I started working and how miserable I was just sitting at home in pain. Thanks for everyone's good words. I can do this!! I can't wait to get started.

My mother in law works in clinic most of the time which is the typical 9-5 thing and then floats to the ER for overtime. That's also an option too. I love the ER too and I constantly go through this dilemma of, "should I do something else?" But I always fall back on the ER. That's where my heart is so I totally understand why you feel that way too.

It's only partially related, Karla, but I swear that I have less pain on the days I'm in the bike shop, even though it saps all my energy and I come home exhuasted. It's on your feet for 10 hours, and the work is very physical, particularly for a small woman. WHY OH WHY are there so many tall people on giant bikes? ?

That's the way I feel too. I'm on my feet the whole shift but while I'm working my pain goes "somewhere" else. Having something to do makes things so much better!

So starting off the school year with surgery wasn't quite the way I planned. I'm hoping clinicals are several weeks out. I technically signed a waiver that said I could lift 50 pounds and I'm on weight restrictions now because of the hernia. I'm not sure for how long? I got my books this week and tried to start reading. The narcs. make me want to sleep all day but I'm determined to get going on my reading. School starts sept 26! Yeah!

Congratulations on being accepting and starting in days. i myself am a little under 2 weeks from handing my last assignment in before i am a nurse. My endometriosis too has influenced by decision in nursing. i really want to be paediatric nurse and possibly work in women's health clinic in a few years and possibly get my midwifery to specialise in ante-natal care for women.
Good luck and enjoy your study, it appears theres enough of us around to ask questions throughout your study if you need it.

Its very cool to have some fellow Endo soon-to-be, or already are RN's. We can spread word about endo in the field itself. Pharmacology is 8am tomorrow. I'm on antibiotics for an abscessed tooth and self cathing myself once a day for IC. I'm thinking I should be the patient not the one learning but I will do this, I can do this!!

Both in our orientation and on the online board the teacher has made remarks about getting up and going to the bathroom. like: "you should be able to hold it for an hour and half", or "please wait for breaks to go to the bathroom, you should be able to hold it until then". This is a very competitive/hard to get in class and I'm terrified by the thought of telling the very ornery professor that that is a long wait, especially as my IC newly diagnosed was very ticked off by the long surgery with catheter in. I was doing okay with my new meds but unbelievably all three have run out at the same time (since its taken a week to get prior authorization and now to order them). I just feel so awkward with her comments if I am going to be running in and out of class but she is a RN, she should know better. I just don't know what to do about this? She even made a comment that if we can't hold it then she wants us to sit at the back so we don't disturb other students, like we are some kind of delinquents. Its just frustrating.

That's a really odd thing to do with a class of adults. I would say that sort of thing to my 6th graders, but that is a totally different context (and believe me, you don't want to get me started on the power struggles over bathroom rights that a teacher can let herself in for with a bunch of teenagers, if she is silly enough to make that mistake). Maybe just talk to her privately?

I'm about to start third quarter. I'm going to refrain from saying "this time I'm going to do better" because it seems to jinx me. I'm not generally superstisous but... I sure would like one quarter to go well, but I guess this is my life. How do I wrap my head around what I want to do and the restrictions that my health places on me. I want this so badly and I'm just stubborn enough to do it but I feel like it should be easier.

Hey guys! I'm officially done. I still have to pass the NCLEX and I'm waiting to be allowed to schedule it and then I will be done. Its been a long haul. I'm so excited to start looking for a job! I found out that mom asked my hubby if I could do this and he said "at least she is distracted". I knew my sister thought my health was to bad to do it, didn't know my mom thought so too. LOL I guess I'm just stubborn! ;D
