It's hard Karla . Ideally we should all have an environment where we can just focus on our studies. I know that having to struggle through all this will make you a fantastic nurse in the future. You know more than most nurses/doctors what it's like to be a patient and I know you will treat people so well. Getting through school is the tough part and I hope that you can find a way to balance it all. It's quite a lot to deal with difficult courses, labs, a family, health problems, etc. And you're doing it all! Stay tough! I know you can get through it.

I caught wind of this website a few weeks ago where this super genius smart guy made 100s of videos on various topics ranging from math, sciences, humanities, finance, etc. and he just posts them for free on this website. It's absolutely amazing! I just watched some of his physics videos and they are helping me so much. If you need help in a subject, chances are there's a video on here for you. There's even a healthcare and medicine section! I highly recommend this site if you need help in school. It's helping me tons study for the MCAT. www.khanacademy.org/#browse

I just started watching them today and I'm kicking myself for not using this site sooner. I could have saved myself a whole lot of stress trying to figure this crap out on my own. I love that site!

I'm so excited! I got another good grade. I'm having a good quarter so far... No recovery from surgery and no four day stay in the hospital is apparently helping! Its been so frustrating studying 24/7 and not getting the satisfaction of seeing my hard work on the test score. I have slowed way down on my test taking and I think it helped. IT was funny today though, I was halfway through the test and all of a sudden I was just staring off into space and I don't know if I fell asleep with my eyes open but I was gone. All of a sudden I shook myself and I'm thinking; "where am I?, oh yeah, taking a test, what question am I on?" lol. How do you fall asleep while taking a test? ROFL

Oh boy do I know exactly how you feel........ as I got up at 2am today to study.... lol
I'm glad you're getting better grades though! Nothing frustrates me more when I work my butt off and don't get the grade I feel I deserve, especially when it's my health that stands in my way!
Keep it up Karla!!

My sick sense of Irony had laughing at me in the ER tonight studying Pharmacology while I waited the results of my UA for a possible UTI. And what's was I studying for pharmacology? Yup! Antibiotics. Guess I call that my pre-test? Argh! I swear it's psychosomatic some days. I'll be calling Dr Mos in the morning but I did start on the antibiotics to tonight

I'm so sorry Karla. It actually does help study though! LOL. I remember when I had my pancreas problems, I was studying the pancreas in my endocrinology class. I will never forget all of the pancreatic functioning. HAHA I used to get chronic UTI's, ALL OF THE TIME. My gyn put me on post-coital antibiotics since he seemed to think that sex was causing all of mine. Trust me, I tried EVERYTHING to prevent these damn things like cleaning excessively after, urinating after, drinking tons of water, cranberry. Nothing worked. I hate taking medications if I can treat something naturally but nothing worked. So now that I take one low-dose antibiotic after intercourse and I haven't had a UTI in months. Thank goodness! I'm not sure if this is the case for you since you have a lot of other serious bladder problems but I just figured I'd throw it out there. I hope you feel better soon! School rant for me, I'm taking a virology final today and I'm NOT ready. But after this... I have one more and then I'm completely done with my bachelors degree. UGh I can't wait.

I guess the extra two hours studying last night in the ER payed off! I managed to pass with a great 81.7 (in nursing school 80% and above is a pass) and even better our group score was 96% which pulls me up even more. Now last quarter I had this beautiful cushion built up in Pharmacology and bombed a bunch of tests/assignments in a row and was sweating bullets because I was afraid I wasn't going to pass so... I'm going to try [glow=red,2,300]NOT[/glow] to do that! lol

So you know that every class it seems has the "hecklers" in the back row making snide remarks about pretty much everything that come up. We were discussing Endometriosis in class today and I'm quite literally tensed up and was telling myself "don't say anything, don't say anything... " over and over because its only appropriate if someone is asking me directly and I was chastised in the first quarter of school for talking to much about personal stuff. BUT inevitably the information was not correct. So I raised the question and corrected the professor. She had made been pretty factual up until that point but she commented that "well unless you take everything out and then its all gone and you will be better", at which time I HAD to say something. I said "I would like to add to that please, a correction, a Hysterectomy with bilateral salpingo oopherectomy will only remove the Endometriosis that is directly on the ovaries and uterus. Any endometriosis that is left on the body will continue to grow." The professor was very nice about saying, "well that makes sense" and talked about why etc. So I'm thinking I'm in the clear, next topic please when a wenatchee student asked if "endometriosis could be moved from one place of the body to the next during surgery" and the professor is doing the "I don't know speech, I will have to look that up" and so I said "I can speak to that, and yes it can be moved around by surgery if the doctor technique is not careful." but as I'm saying that I hear the "hecklers" laughing about something. I ignored them and said my bit. BUT I was shaking and my heart was going nuts, and I realized the reason it bugged me so bad is I was flashing back to high school. AT break I talked to them and asked if I "not been professional and did I say to much? etc?" because they are nice people just NEVER shut up, and he says ""oh we weren't laughing at you but at what the other guy who apparently said "can the professor in Wenatchee answer that questions" referring to me and they thought that was hilarious that they thought I was the professor. I'm doing better now, I talked to my hubby about it when I got home but It kind of freaked me out a bit. I was wondering if when I calm down enough to be rational if I should ask the back row hecklers to keep it down a bit. We are supposed to be 1. Adults, 2. Nurses, 3. Emotional support for each other. Or do I just ignore what was a minor misunderstanding on my part. The real issue is our campus doesn't have a teacher. We do our class online with a video screen and microphones that we use to ask the professor questions etc. We can't always see who we are talking to either so its a bit nerve wracking to ask questions or bring up things to clarify information. Its also very hard to hear because the students on the other side rarely remember to use their microphones. Without a teacher in the room to occasionally say "shh..." it can get a little to noisy and people start talking to each other to much. I'm a front row person, always have been. I listen better and learned a long time ago that teachers NEVER watch the front row. But would it be okay to ask them to be quiet? Or to explain why their laughing made me feel bad?
I think that I may grab a few trustworthy articles and post them on the school discussion board, about the questions I brought up. I think the teacher would use the information. She seemed receptive to it.

That's a tough one. I'm glad you felt comfortable enough to speak up and correct the professor. Asking them if you were out of line might be just all they needed to realize that you hear them and that they need to watch what they say. Sometimes people don't realize it, and drawing attention to the fact that you heard something might be enough to shut them up, at least in the short term. If you're thinking of saying something to them, I suspect their comments comments will be long forgotten (by them) by the time you mention something to them. Your call, but that's my 2 cents, knowing I'm one to either say it at the moment or not say it at all.

I completely understand your frustration. I think this is one of those things we face being older non-traditional students. It is absolutely maddening to me when people talk through class because for one, I don't have rich parents paying thousands of dollars for my education. This is MY expense and MY time. Second, like you said we are adults and are supposed to be professionals.
I think what Karen said is probably true. The fact that you brought to their attention may be enough for them to realize that they were being louder than they thought. Another thing I think it worth mentioning is how you were able to realize the root of your anxiety in this situation stemming all the way to your experience in high school. Being able to recognize those things helps interpret feelings and keep your emotions in check. That's a good thing!
Have you considered talking to the professor to give a generic," Please no more disruptions during class" type announcements? I've done that before and it seems to work.

Frankly, I think this one should be up to the prof. I'm a non trad too, I can totally understand where you are coming from. But that puts you in an awkward position- I always second guessed myself and felt paranoid after standing up for things. Having the prof say something might be easier on you, and give the hecklers a chance to shut up!
I'm impressed you were talking about endo in class though. I would have totally talked the whole time to make sure your fellow students got it right!!

Like I said, we don't have a professor to tell. iTV is brutal because we have no teacher, our 1st year liaison quit and the second year has tried to help quite a bit but she doesn't have time to sit in the class while the iTV is on. Fortunately this being the nursing program its a little more of the older kind of student but they can still be kind of abrasive. After all we are all heading to the health profession and they tend to have pretty rough humor. You kind of have to have a rough sense of humor in order to survive this buisness.

I guess I was thinking the prof on the other end could see and hear what was going on in your classroom- it is live, right? What a frustrating situation, sounds like you guys are getting the short end of the stick.
