HA! I have sleep paralysis! It's so freakin scary!!! I used to have it as a child but it stopped for many years and then when I got really sick it started up again. What happens is when you sleep there is a chemical that paralyses your body so that you don't act out your dreams. But for people like me who have sleep paralysis, we can partially wake up but still have this paralytic chemical working. So imagine you're awake and you can't move, you can't yell for help, you can't do anything except lay there until it stops. Then if you are still partially in a dream state you can actually start hallucinating. I think that's the more scary part of it because you can see some really scary stuff but you can't run or yell because you're paralyzed. I read on the internet that if you avoid sleeping on your back you actually won't get episodes of this anymore. And sure enough, when I started forcing myself to sleep on my side all of the episodes stopped. I have no idea why this works but it worked really well for me. It's quite terrifying when it happens and I'm glad I found a way to get rid of it.

Well it's not like an out-of-body sort of thing. You're literally awake and just stuck to the bed, trapped inside your mind. It's hard to explain.

Crazy!! That sounds so scary! On a lighter note, I had a dream last night that I didn't want to wake up for. In my dream, I was either dating or married to an old friend from college. We used to work together and hung out a lot outside of work. He was about 5'4" and had dark hair and piercing blue eyes... I'm half tempted now to track him down and get in touch with him after that dream! Aw, he was so nice, so much fun, and so cute (minus the height)!

Ha ha! I've dated guys shorter than me, and there have been many that were shorter when I had my heels on, but he was a lot shorter... I could rest my chin on the top of his head! But damn, he was good looking... He worked out a lot, too, and had an ass you could bounce a coin off. But I digress.. I have to find him!

Yes Karen get in touch with him;) Dreams are signs....
My girlfriend said with her experience that it is almost like a hullicination state. Yes Jenaya it is like being trapped inside your body. She said she knows she wants to move but still feels like she is dreaming. This time it was a dream about her dog sittine one her legs when she woke up but when she was out of that state of mind her dog was not even in the room.

I remember I had one occasion where I knew I was in a sleep paralysis episode and I got scared but told myself to remain calm and to think of something non-threatening so that I wouldn't have something scary happen. So I pictured my childhood teddy bear in hopes that it would keep me calm. I sh*t you not, that damn teddy bear came floating into the room and when it got to be floating over my bed where I was laying the damn thing turned into this scary demon thing and flew at me! It was that point that the paralysis episode ended and I literally flew out of my skin and the demon thingy was gone. If you are a Harry Potter fan, it looked very much like a dementor! I'm so glad it doesn't happen anymore. Sometimes I'll accidentally end up on my back and will wake up like that and it's so crappy!

The last I heard, he was up in the Minneapolis area and I was just there for work, so when I got there Sunday night, I emailed him. I had no idea if his email address was still valid (guess it would have been one of the few times I wanted to be on FB... but I'm still boycotting it). Sure enough, he emailed me back! Between my work schedule and his, we weren't able to find a time to get together. Sigh. But, I'll be up there in a few weeks again and we agreed to try again! Although I had a dream that he and I were together, I'm just super excited to see him and catch up - don't expect anything more than that! If it weren't for that dream, though, I don't think I would have even thought to reach out to him!

I thought that was caused by sleep apnea?? You are actually not breathing for a second. I do that every once in a while and you can't get up and you definitely hallucinate, but my entire family has a history of sleep apnea.

Sleep paralysis used to happen to me all the time as a kid and I have had it happen several times in the past few years. I don't have dreams about it, but when I wake up in the middle of the night and can't move I just get super annoyed (probably because I don't have those freaky dreams coming to life). One time while having one of these episodes(a couple yrs ago), I was trying to reposition myself on the bed (to help blood circulation) by wiggling my body, and I fell off the bed and landed flat on my face (because my arms were still mostly asleep, I had no way to stop the face plant.... At lease it was a carpeted floor! lol). It is really humiliating to have to lay on the floor with your face planted in the carpet for minutes just waiting for your limbs to work. I thought sleep paralysis was caused by poor circulation?

I had a funny thing happen to me a few weeks ago. I woke up on the floor! I was so confused that I yelled out my husbands name because I had this momentary thought that maybe I hurt myself. I don't really remember what led to my being on the floor either. I had taken the full prescription dose of my hydroxyizine because I had been in a lot of pain and I think it made me hallucinate. It was scary and then I started laughing because I was so confuse. LOL
