I'm freaking out here... Too much on my plate, too many unanswered questions, and I'm having a hard time processing it all!
Here's the short version: I lost my job 3 weeks ago. I found a program where I can get some funding to go back to school, and found an associate degree that I really, really want to pursue.
Here are my dilemmas: School starts on August 24. I just applied to the program, and I'd assume I'd be accepted, but I don't know if there's a wait list (there wasn't a few days ago, but...) I don't know if the program is eligible for funding, and if so, how much, but I'll have to apply and enroll and start before I'll know for sure. I don't know if the classes I'll need will be full. Oh, and the thing that really complicates all this? The program is only offered at a school that's 1.5 hours away, so it'd mean a long commute 2-3 days a week for 1.5 years!!! And since I'd be commuting, and classes may be already full for this semester, I may end up with a goofy schedule and may end up commuting even more days.
So I may be making a huge life change but won't really know how it all works out just yet. I have control issues, and that makes situations like this really difficult to deal with!! I'm excited by the opportunity, but there are so many uncertainties. Totally freaking out!
(Oh, and before anyone goes off about the potential funding - I don't agree with all the programs that the govt. has going right now, but if I have an opportunity to get some help for school - something I would NEVER be able to get on my own - I have NO problem taking it. I'm responsible, hard working, and WILL make the most of it, no doubt about it.)

LOL! About the funding...heck, if you can get some of your tax money back through this--go for it!!!
That is a lot of commuting! I had a long commute once, and it SUCKED! If you didn't own your condo and coudl rent an apartment near the school, that would be one thing. Could you perchance lease your condo to someone while you rent a nearby apartment? Plus, in the snow, that is realllllllllllly going to be a difficult commute. That would freak me out about having to miss class!
I, too, freak out about stuff like this! I want to know 100% of the game plan!

Yeah, the condo board doesn't approve of renting out units... Only if it's a family member or your place is on the market, so that's out of the question. The good news is that I'd likely be able to transfer a lot of credits from my bachelor's degree, so I wouldn't have to take as many courses, thus have (hopefully) fewer days to commute, and there may be 2-3 classes that I could take online, so that'd help... There are also a few courses that I might be able to take at the local tech school and transfer over, too, but that's more juggling to do... The uncertainty is killing me!
I met with the guy about funding today, and if he would have said hands down, they'd decline the program, I would have been able to stop thinking about it. I'll find out next week if they'll even approve the program I want to take! Oh, and they'd help me out with reimbursement for a bit of mileage, so that'd help...
Driving in bad weather freaks me out, too, but at least it's mostly interstate driving. And I have some family/friends an hour or less in the other direction so if needed, I could likely crash there on occassion. I even thought about striking a deal with a local cheap motel if I had class 2 days in a row!
See the kinds of things that occupy my mind? Scary!!!!!!

I completely understand the control issue... I am totally like that too. It would be driving me absolutely insane to not know what exactly was happening or what will be happening. I drive my poor hubby nuts. I am totally freaking out now b/c I haven't heard back from that job, and they've only had my CV for about 24 hours and it's a Friday - my mind never stops with the what ifs.
Screw the funding and thinking anyone here would judge you for it, I would totally take advantage of it too. Like Ouchy said, get some of the tax money you paid in. You are using the money for education, not b/c you are a crack smoking hooker and too lazy to get a real job :-). Good luck and I'm sure it will work out for you! Keep us updated!

And how do you know I'm NOT a crack smoking hooker? This is just all moving too fast for me and I really wonder if I'm going in the right direction with things. I guess I'll just have to wait and see how it all pans out, I guess. Frick, that's so hard to do! (And Stacy, I get what you're saying about getting all anxious about not hearing back from the job. I mean, those things NEVER seem to go fast enough, always seem to drag out and it sucks! Fingers crossed!!)

Well, I at least know that your not a crack smoking hooker that is too lazy to get a job... and you probably would already have that rate negotiated at that little motel you mentioned I feel pretty confident in my statement. Things will work out the right way for you; whichever way it may be. I'm trying to take that same advice, if they don't call, then it's for a good reason and I'm better off. I've always looked back at the strange way some things unfolded in my life and say, wow, I'm sure glad it happened that way, cuz if not, I wouldn't be here today.

Ha - perhaps I'm just a motivated crack-smoking hooker! Geez, with my control-freak personality, if I ever had to go into that profession, I'd be complete with business plan, marketing materials, negotiated contracts with vendors, etc! Ha! Yup, I'm with you - things certainly happen for a reason, no doubt about that! I just got back from breakfast with a good friend of mine and she said that whatever happens, I'll make it work. You will, too!

Did you ever watch the show Hung on HBO? It's basically the same concept, but it's a man - he's a happiness consultant.

This is the difference between a hooker and a wh*re! Wh*res don't charge. Hookers are businesswomen!

Nope, but I'm going to have to check it out now!! Happiness consultant - I like that! It's definitely not one of their best original programming shows, but it comes on right after True Blood, so we stick around for it. We loves us some True Blood!!
