I've definitely noticed a certain male-doctor-ego thing going on.. they don't seem to like it when a woman in their care wants information, respect, and choice. The majority I have seen at least seem uncomfortable with this. I am shortly seeing a new male gyn who comes well recommended. I just kept moving on from ones that sucked, in that "there there, don't worry your little head about it and let me take care of it"/ "You don't know what's best for you, I know what's best for you" type of attitude, in addition to interrupting you when you're trying to ask or explain something.. Grrrrhhh!! No more, I'm done smiling and nodding docilely while being dictated to. Here's hoping this new guy is as good as his rep.
It can be hard to remember that they are working for us. Hopefully you live in an area where you do have some choice. I know its a hassle, it's definitely not easy to drop a doc and move on if you're not getting compassionate, respectful care, but it is worth it. There is research out now on how badly many male docs treat their female patients. The power dynamic is often very skewed in their favour unless they're exceptionally cool and working to level it. But many (or most?) don't exactly have a collaborative spirit or much respect for women. I would advise anyhone who felt belittled or disrespected by their dr to start looking for another. The College of Physicians and Surgeons in your area and RateMDs.com are good tools to use to find out who is accepting new pts and who seems to get better reviews.
Of course RateMDS.com is completely subjective, and anyone can have good days and bad days.. (I'm sure I don't make the best impression on folks when I am stressed out, fatigued, pmsing or in pain-lol) but at least you can see how the majority of people experienced the dr.
Good luck!!
