The time when I sampled it I had a ton of crazy dreams too, and I had only taken about a quarter of a pill. I read that it causes really vivid dreams or nightmares, although I am guessing as ouchy said that it doesn't exactly cause them, it just helps you have the right kind of sleep for that. If you are nightmare prone this may not be the sleep aid for you, although in that case I would recommend finding the cause of the nightmares because if you aren't dreaming you aren't getting enough of the right kind of sleep, and you can't just spend your whole life being sleep-deprived because you're scared of nightmares! Fortunately I very rarely have nightmares. I don't know whether it helped me to sleep or not because I've been sleeping fine anyway, I was just testing it to see if I would have any side effects. I was pretty groggy the next day, but I think that's because my loving cat woke me up at 4 am.

I actually now only take about 1/8 of a pill, and it works great for me! It took me a while to figure out my right dosage.

Just found this thread. I've been taking melatonin as needed for about a month now. My therapist suggested it when I told her I was exhausted - she suggested it as a way to get more productive sleep. Can I just say that I love this stuff? Whenever I've taken Tylenol PM or any sort of sleep aid, I typically wake up feeling hung over. Not the case with melatonin. You know that really tired feeling where you can barely keep your eyes open? That's what one pill does for me in about 45 minutes. When I can't stop my mind from racing at night, that's a huge help!! Looks like it's a good fit for me, although I can see why it may not be for everyone. I have noticed more vivid dreams, though, that's for sure!

I took it for a short period of time and loved it too! I didn't have any of those crazy side effects. I don't usually have sleep problems but if I do I just drink chamomile tea now and it knocks me out!

Does anyone know whether melatonin interacts with any other medications? It sounds like it could be something i'd like to try, i have a lot of trouble sleeping and always wake up exhausted, although this partly may be due to the fact that lastely i've been having such bad nightmares i wake up soaked in sweat several times a night!

^Yikes!!! I know how scary that can be. Are you on any antidepressants to help control the nightmares? Mine stopped the very first night I started taking Zoloft.

Sorry, Rach, don't have any experience with that as I'm completely off prescription meds. When my therapist recommended it, though, she suggested I play around with the dosage to find one that works, starting out small and upping things from there.
And yikes about the nightmares! Those suck!!

Does anyone have more details on how melatonin can be contraceptive? Is it a side effect, or could it possibly be used as a primary contraceptive? (FYI, I have no plans to try to use it that way; the opposite, actually. I generally steer clear of contraceptive meds unless medically necessary, like a hormone therapy for endo.)

Ouchy, i think the anitdepressants i'm on can actually effect dreams- i know some brands can anyway. I'm planning on talking to my doctor about it next time i see her, to see if there's something else i can try that might let me get a better night's sleep!
I will definately ask about the melatonin as well!

i worked with a psychiatrist who would prescribe melatonin to his clients with sleep issues, instead of sleeping pills that are addictive. most clients had good results with it.

A neurologist told my girlfriend that taking melatonin long term can have an unintended effect of having your body stopping to produce its own because it thinks there's enough there. I guess this is fine if you keep taking it but if you stop after a while (not sure how long) I wonder what happens if your body becomes deficient in melatonin. I don;t have too bad a time with insomnia myself, but I'd probably want something more natrural than pharmaceutical if I did.
