I could really use some help! A few years ago I was put on Metformin to help with my PCOS and to boost fertility and suffered from horrid diarrhea so stopped taking it. My last visit doc wants me to try again and since I stated I have had horrible stomach issues (diarrhea, nausea, pain) . Anyone one else have problems with this and what did you do to help it? I am not going to take it till I talk to my doc on monday, but there has got to be some how that I can take it and not suffer so badly...right?

Hmm, I thought we had a thread on this but I can't find it at the moment...
I'm not on metformin but have had several friends that were on it. Some experienced similar side effects. I know one friend switched to a extended-release formula so the drug wasn't unleashed in her system all at once - it was spread out throughout the day. That seemed to help her considerably. I believe Helen just switched to that - she might be able to chime in.

I started it late October. 500 mg 3 x day, started off with one, then progressivel upped the dose. I got all those symptoms too. I did switch to glucophage SR (slow release) but was taking other meds at the time and still got the nausea, lack of appetite. The diarrhoea part did eventually ease off. Part of what it's supposed to do is suppress your appetite though. It's supposed to get better the longer you take it.

Thanks gals! I've just recently read about the extended release and read up on it says the diarrhea problem is 53% on regular and 9.3% on extended, hopefully the doc will help me out with that... let you know how it goes when I know. karen- I swear awhile ago I say a thread on it too, but when I tried to find it it wasn't there...if you find it let me know I would love to see what other's are experiencing.

I've already looked - there are few on PCOS, and a few that mention Metformin, but I don't think we have a Metformin thread.

Hopefully this grows a little and those of us dealing with this can support each other! Still waiting to hear from the doc...

I tried metformin. An endocrinologist told me to take 500mg at 3 pm. It helped me. She said if I went to my gyno they would most likely put me on a dose that would be too high and I wouldn't tolerate. It sounds like she was rt. I checked with an endo specialist to make sure it was ok and he said it's a hormone and I should come off. I did but I still get cysts. I'm thinking of going back on. Hope that helps....

In what ways did it help?

I took 50mg (I think. 1/2 of the lowest dosage, anyway), and it made me ovulate on time.

Ok. It was actually 500mg once a day I was on. I just posted a display of charts comparing cycles of mine with/without Metformin in the other PCOS thread.

I suspect Metformin has made my hair loss much, much worse.

Really? Oh no. I figured it would help with that due to regulating the hormones. Rats.

So did I. My hair has been falling out so much worse than usual recently. Hair loss/growth goes in 3 month cycles, and 3 months ago I was on it. I have read that it can be a side effect. Stopped taking it mid December so I hope the hair loss will slow down. I stopped because it was making me nauseous and I didn't want that spoiling xmas. I was on 500mg 3 x daily. If I go back on it'll be slow release - 1000 mg 1 x daily. I'm not even TTC, not sure why I was on such a high dose.

I dont' know why most doctors dont' start you out on the lowest dosage first? I'm glad mine did that. I only took it for 3-months, though.

It was 500 mg 1 x daily for a week, then over 3 weeks increase by 500 mg a day. Anyways, don't know if I'll go back on it unless I try to get preggers. I think ovulation pain was better while I was on it though.
