And 6 peanut butter patties later, guess who's pain level was a bit higher yesterday/last night? It wasn't horrible, but it certainly was elevated in comparison to the glorious week I was having! Too much sugar = pain? Or just processed sugar = pain? Hmm, might have to pace myself and just have one or two a day and see how I react. I don't want to jump the gun and just give up cookies all together until do some research here!

ouchy, did you get the diet from a book? Does it seem that there are good vegetarian options? this is a problem i always run into with diets. There is always meat involved!

Yup. "Syndrome X Complete Nutritional Guide to Prevent and Reverse Insulin Resistance" (or something like that!) by Jack Challem. If you know good protein substitutes instead of meat, you could make it work. Just sub like nuts or tofu or something isntead of meat, I guess.

I read "The Insulin Resistance Diet" book and found it very useful, although they do make references to reading more in other sources if you're vegetarian. They do offer a TON of food suggestions for fast food restaurants, pre-made meals that you can find in the typical grocery store, and lots of easy recipes. Good luck!

Ok, it's official - I've been on the IR diet for a month now. Not 100% every day, but very close.
Here's what I've found so far: - I haven't really lost much weight - just a measly 3.5 pounds for now (I blame BC) - but I feel like my belly bloat from my chest to my waist is gone and my gut bloat is improved. I no longer feel like I'm 7 months pregnant. If I decide to go off BC, I'm hoping to lose more. - Now that I know the system and am comfy balancing/linking my carb intake with protein, I'm focusing more on portion control... - I'm not in pain every day! I still see a bit of a spike mid-month, and more of a spike at the end of my cycle, but in between it's quite bearable and when it's higher, it's not as high as it was. I still feel like I have adhesion pain regularly, but it's a different kind of pain. - My first period post-Mirena (and into the new diet) was fine. No biggie, not heavy, not light, very little cramping during (although some cramping before). - Biggest breakthrough? Because I'm able to get my pain levels down most days, I can CLEARLY tell when I've eaten something my body doesn't like, or if I've eaten too much. Withing 2-45 minutes, the pain lets me know that I shouldn't eat that again. How's that for motivation to stay away from binging on sweets!?! It's typically sweets/high carbs that trigger pain, although every now and then I'm stumped.
Figured I'd post an update in case anyone was thinking about giving it a go. I swear, it's done more for my pain than any of the pain pills I was on. I've only taken Tramadol ONE TIME in the last month, and ibuprofin a few other days. For me, that's HUGE.

I've been so bust lately and haven't been planning my meals as well, which means I've been straying from the IR diet about 25% of the time. I did a ton of grocery shopping today and have made meals to tide me over for the week so I have no excuse! I always do so much better when I plan ahead...
The pain during my last period sucked for 3 days, but overall I've been feeling so much better pain wise and my lapses haven't really affected me as much, which is why I've likely slipped more. But my energy has sucked so I'm banking on the IR diet to help nudge it up a bit. Here's what's on my menu for the week:
- Southwest stir fry (pork/chicken w/black bean salsa, peppers, black beans, avacado, sour cream) - Chicken/apple/walnut salad w/goat cheese & whatever dressing is in my fridge. I'm crossing my fingers that I have some poppy seed left! - Mashed cauliflower - Snacks: boiled eggs, cottage cheese w/fruit, string cheese, nut mix, ants on a log, popcorn (Trader Joes has the BEST organic pre-popped with only olive oil and salt - super yummy!)

I started out on the Insulin Resistance Diet in December because my blood sugar was a little border line. But it is ok now. I then went on the South Beach diet which I lost 30 pounds but I getting alittle bored with it. Maybe because I mostly do no carbs and I know I should be eating some carbs.

Holy crap - nice work on losing so much weight! I have to admit I don't follow the insulin resistance diet strictly these days, but tend to follow the more protein/less carbs whenever I can, and certainly cut back on my carb intake in comparison to before. Add a few carbs back in if you feel you can do that in moderation! Otherwise, it may be unlikely to sustain the diet long term.
Did you notice a change in how you felt health-wise when you modified your diet?

I bought the Syndrome X book about 7 years ago (can't find it - gutted) because I knew there was a reason for my being overweight other than just overeating. I've always eaten pretty healthily about 70 % of the time and although I've never exactly been a gym bunny,I've not always been totally inactive. I did judo for about 7 years when I was younger, have always enjoyed swimming and have been a gym member on and off since uni. The book made total sense to me, and when I tried an Atkins type diet about 6 years ago I lost a lot of weight. Really struggled with no carbs for breakfast though and started feeling queasy nearly all the time.
So I'm starting the IR diet this week. I struggle to throw out food so I'll use up most of what I've got left in fridge/cupboards and then will go shopping on Tuesday to stock up on more good stuff. I've been getting an organic veg box delivered every week for about 10 months and I love it. I'll struggle with giving up carbs but I'm desperate to shift some weight and I'm convinced it's not as easy as the whole calories in v calories out theory. A lot of us don't tolerate certain foods well, as we all know. So I'm going to give this a serious go - now that I feel a bit better and more motivated in general I'm sure I'll be able to prepare the right meals. I already regularly make a pan of soup on a Sunday to take for lunches to work. Today's is carrot and coriander again. Breadmaker is beavering away making me a wholemeal loaf. I feel quite excited!!

Yay! I haven't followed the IR diet in a while, meaning I haven't really had protein with every carb I have, but I have found that I tend to lose weight fast AND feel a lot better if I really cut down on the carbs. And it's not that I'm making a conscious effort to stay away from carbs, I'm just focus on eating natural, non-processed foods. Most of the time, that means I'm somewhat close to the IR diet.
Honestly, for me, planning is EVERYTHING when it comes to making a diet shift. Feel free to post your meals for the week as sometimes I need a bit of inspiration!

I always try so hard to eat the right thing and end up feeling deprived.

I swear, once you read it and understand the logic behind it, it really makes a lot of sense. And it's quite simple once you get the hang of it!

Yep, it's a good one to try. I recently did one called the Waterfall diet and lost 6 lbs in 5 days by cutting out the foods that cause fluid retention. IR diets just make so much sense.
