Well, with several of us moving on to having neonates, I figured we could use another sticky.

Freaky things my baby does/has done! 1) has what looks to be seizures. made me think I either had some freaky postpartum depression or my baby really was possessed. it's a series of all of her expressions, including a huge smile and even a laugh?!? eerily creepy, it comes complete with tongue thrusts and simultaneous eyeball rolling!!!! doctor's conclusion: immature nervous system! 2) at 1 week 6 days, she rolled from her back to her tummy! i thought that wasn't supposed to happen until 4 months?!? i wasn't the only one who saw it, so i'm not nuts on this one! 3) she picks her head up and has done so since still in the hospital! it's wild to watch! she can do it for about 30 seconds at a time! 4) she has a name/sound for eating/breastfeeding! i can make smacking noises, and then she says "aaah-aaah" with just 2 quick little sounds. it's really cute, and I always know what she wants. if she is crying while getting a diaper changed, i can cup her face in my hands and say, "aah-aaah," and she repeats it and calms right down. LOL! "Aah-aaah" always seems to be a reward for diaper changes! babies are cool, weird, loving, and fun!

Wow that's so cute, though I'd be majorly freaked out by the face antics the first time it happened! Immature nervous system maybe, but she sounds like is communicating with you very well already, like not just reacting and making basic cries, but conversing with you! It's crazy that she can do so much already yet still have an immature nervous system

Well, she also says "Aah-aah" and gets her pacifier, so I'm not sure if it's specifically for nursing...but then again, I bet she'd rather nurse than have the paci. However, when she's been nursing for nearly 2 hours starting at 2:00 in the morning, it's time for the paci!

Thanks, meldart! Denna, I use the pacifier because sucking is very soothing to her, and my back is too bad to be her pacifier myself . After she's eaten for 2 hours and I'm completely dry, she still wants to suck (even though she has to be full), so I give her the paci. I am breastfeeding. Apparently, the milk comes out way too fast for her, though. I hear her swallowing at warp speed trying to keep up with it. I have a call in to her pediatrician for a referral to an ear/nose/throat specialist to make sure her palate is okay. She doesn't have a cleft, but I want to make sure her palate isn't too short. Denna, you can totally breastfeed. Buy a pillow called "My Brest Friend." It's great! We were having lots of trouble until I got this the other day. www.toysrus.com/product/index.jsp?productId=2574806 It was the most peaceful nursing! It is a great product. Has a backrest and everything! No more shoulder pain!

Ouchy, My mom gave me the boppy pillow and the only thing that I found it useful for was to prop my daughter up so that she doesn't fall back and hit her head while sitting. It's too bad that you didn't have your daughter before me and recommend "My Brest Friend" so that I could get that instead. I ended up having to nurse while laying down in bed (because of a bad back too), and now she is so used to it that she sometimes refuses to nurse until I lay down in bed with her.
Denna, You should really give nursing a try. It may seem at first that your milk isn't coming in but you have to keep in mind that the milk takes a few days to come in and what they nurse on first is Colostrum (not sure about the spelling), which cleans out their little tummies and prepares them for the outside world. May I recomend that you request a lactation consultant at the hospital when you deliver and DO listen to her. Don't be like me and give your baby the bottle or a pacifier, at least not at first until your milk is well established or you will end up with a low milk supply like myself.
Good Luck!

BB, you could still give "My Brest Friend" a try! I bet she'll love it, bc to her it will feel like she is lying down! I can't do cradle style right now w/ my baby bc of the milk shooting issues, but after she was finished, she'd pop off and just cuddle into a little ball in my arms and fall asleep! Check craigslist and get one for cheap! It's worth a try! Denna, I second what BB said. Definitely request a lactation consultant in the hospital, and don't give two sh*ts to the nurses if they tell you that your baby needs formula. His/her tummy will be super tiny, and colostrum is all you need. This is actually how I wound up in the predicament I am in. They made me pump bc my milk wasn't in, yet I was producing tons of colostrum. THey wound up talking me in to formula feeding/supplementing her in the hospital, and she was constipated and in so much pain for 2 days!!! She goes all the time with breast milk. It has a natural laxative in it. At least give it a try.

Oh, Denna! I had to return my Avent manual pump! The milk was filling the wrong part! I got a Swing electric by Medela, and it is wonderful! If your Avent doesn't work, I highly recommend this one!

OMIG! tonight I went to get a massage with one of my friends. About 20 min. before I got home, my husband said my kiddo started crying and saying "Aah-aah," her word for breastfeeding. He tried to distract her by playing with her. She'd flirt with him and then say "Aah-aah" again. Well, by the time I finally got home, she was mad at me! I put her on teh bed to feed her, but the little stinker had her arms crossed and would NOT spit out her paci! She ALWAYS spits out her paci when she sees me! LOL! I couldn't pull it from her mouth! I left her on the bed and got up (reverse psychology). She looked at me, uncrossed her arms, and spit out her paci! They TOTALLY know what is going on!
