Hi everyone! I did a search on this topic and found 11 threads where this is metioned, but I didn't find the answer I needed. I know this is an area that most of us tend to blush about, but I really need some input on this. I have felt painful bowel movements for a while now, and I noticed that they were more painful during my period. But I'm not sure that it is the 'right' kind of pain. Ouchy - I had read that you experienced very sharp knife like pains. I've had times where I have the sharpe pains. But with this period (time to blush) I couldn't go for the first few days, when I finally did it was worst case of diarreha with the worst cramps I've ever had in my life!! It was pretty much liquid! I had 6 different trips to the bathroom in the matter of hours! And the awful nauseating cramps were still there! Does anyone have the same experiences?? the only reason I ask is because I've noticed pretty much all of my symptoms have been getting worse over the last few months.... Also - I've thought about everything I've eaten and it just doesn't add up. Any help would be really appreciated!

Yah. That sounds about right. My very first period, I didn't go until day 7, and it was very painful when I finally went. Now (though no pain w/ last period and am not having periods now), the worst bowel movements seem to happen when I have the most cramps. I found a HUGE help in adding psyllium husk fiber to my diet.

(((((angelas))))) I too find my BMs are more painful during menses and I have also found my bowel issues have been getting steadily worse. For a few years I didn't think much of my bowel issues because it's hard to know what "normal" is when it's a topic that isn't readily spoken about with friends. Now I'm a bit more educated and know for a fact that I have severe pouch of douglas endo. I have been paying a lot more attention to my body and have been keeping a diary which lists things like meals, BMs, pains, etc. When I get sharp pains they are usually in the rectal area. I'm often constipated but sometimes it switches over to diarrhoea. Here's a TMI one for ya... don't read unless you gotta: my most recent BM (during menses) started out pretty loose and then ended up hard as rocks. In the one movement! The second half was the most painful. I have experienced the horridly crampy diarrhoea you mention, although it doesn't happen all the time. Such episodes have been awful. Do you have 2-3 times as many BMs during menses? I have noticed it and I think it's weird. Do you have rectal bleeding or mucus? I got the impression from my doc that those two things indicate that the endo has gone into the bowel rather than just being on the outside. I don't think I have bleeding but it can be hard to tell during menses! As for the mucus, I've had it before and thought nothing much of it, from now on I will be paying a lot more attention to how often I get it! I don't know if this answers anything for you angelas but I'm happy enough to talk it over. Can you ask some more questions?

I have had that exact same thing where half is hard as a rock!! I always just thought that was because of what I ate! HA! I always notice that I have to go more during my period and it always tends to be messy. I refer to it as 'period poops' since I don't experience that during any other time of the month! I have had the mucous as well - and this is gross, but it looked like snot all on it! SICK!! Like you its hard to tell if there is blood in there during my period since the toilet is usually got clots and all that other fun stuff in it! The diarreha that I started having last night still has not stopped. And I do beleive there is blood with that! Its really red. That could be just from the diarreha though right?? My stomach is still very unsettled, and I was up all night... so now I am wondering if I've gotten myself a bout of food poisoning! But when you talk about the pains in your rectum, do you mean the sharp pains that make you jump a little?? ahhaa! sounds so funny, but I get those often!! I've had the pleasure of hemroids as well and always thought that maybe I had one inside that was getting pinched! Now I'm not so sure!
Thank you so much for discussing this with me!! It makes me feel so much better to know that I'm not the only one having these embarrassing experiences!!!
Hugs!!

When I'm not on my period, I usually have pretty bad constipation and bleeding during BMs. Sometimes there is a startling amount of blood. Then, when I get my period, I tend to have a shift to really bad diarrhea. However, it seems like no matter what, BM are always very painful for me (it feels like there is really bad tearing going on, but I had a sigmoidoscopy, and I don't have any fissures).

Still got the diarrhoea? That's no good! (((hug))) Hope it disappears soon! Surely there would be something you could take for it, whether food or something from the drug store? I don't know. Can't help you with the concerns about blood in diarrhoea... I must admit I tend to avoid looking at mine. Silly I guess. Yep, I previously assumed my problems were my own fault for diet reasons. My, how we torture ourselves! I always notice that I have to go more during my period and it always tends to be messy. I refer to it as 'period poops' Exactly! But when you talk about the pains in your rectum, do you mean the sharp pains that make you jump a little?? ahhaa! sounds so funny, but I get those often!! Yeah, the pains come randomly, or particularly when I need to go, and they only last a few seconds, but they are intense, and they totally twist my face up like no other pain does! Everything freezes until it's over! I hate when it happens when I'm driving!

sorry for the graphics - but I just went again and there is so little coming out cause I've been going once an hour... but there was definitley blood... like bloody mucous. I don't have fissures either cause it was only pink on the paper - but bright red in the toilet! I've already taken 3 doses of pepto (since that is the best thing we have here) and I tried eating some soda crackers... my stomach is still soooo crampy! and of course with it being good Friday today NOTHING is open!!!
Aussie you made me laugh so hard when you mentioned that face while driving!!! HA!! I've had it happen while walking or making dinner! Its only for a second! but its so startling!!

Ok, this is the thread I have been looking for for years. Thanks for starting this. I have pouch of douglas endo as well and this is what I go through during my cycles so get ready for more gross details. About 3 days before my period starts, I have this clear mucus that comes out of me...not with stool, like when you have to pass gas but this mucus comes out. Horribly embarrassing because everytime I have to pass gas, this muscus comes out. The following day, strands of red blood will show up in the musus and it will also show up in my stool. Once my period starts, my stool is really loose but oh so painful and I can't tell if there is blood because of my period. After CD2 or 3, the mucus goes away and so does the blood from the stool but the pain with bm's is still there. After my period is done, I feel so much better and relaxed (I have muscle tension during my period). I am the lucky few who knows when ovulation occurs. I get the pain every month and I just watch for cervical mucus (sometime good, sometimes not) but the funny thing I notice is that about 3-5 days after ovulation, my BM's start to hurt, not stabbing pains like during my period but a tolerable pain. The clear mucus shows up again with some blood and this usually happens for 1-2 days. When this happens, I wonder if this is a sign that progesterone is low and this indicates that I am not pregnant?

Cervical mucus isn't a pregnancy sign. You can't go by that, so don't let that get you down.

ok, my two cents is just to say that this thread is why I find this forum so valuable!
I get a sharp, shooting pain too, associated with bowel movements but not necessarily during my period. I only get them occasionally but often enough! I never before identified it as anything in particular, but reading this thread has helped me to identify it. I have never had bloody stool and the pain passes rather quickly but it is momentarily paralyzing!

I also notice more BM when I have my period - I actually read somewhere years ago (pre-knowing I had endo) that this was normal during menstruation!!!! What a joke!!!
I used to have intense pain during BM on my period, but now that's gone away. I sometimes feel nausea and have more abdominal pains than normal but not severe pain thankfully. So sorry to hear about those that do though.
It's more diarrhea during my period too. Sometimes several times a days versus once a day normally. Wonder why this is? My accupuncturist says that everything inside that area is probably swollen when you have your period - with the endometrial tissue that's everywhere being full of blood, so that's what makes things sore too. Maybe the pressure on the bowel messses with things.

I usually only have the real painful bowel movements during my menses. It hurts soo mad that I tend to want to stop in the middle of a bowl movement. It has brought me to tears. I have also noticed that these last few cycles I would purposely wait to use the restroom until the pain let up because it was less painful. I am so sorry for all of you who have it severely, I pray for you because I know how painful it must be. I am lucky to say it has never made me bleed rectally but over the past 6 months it seems as though it has been getting worse each cycle. I am glad I am pregnant and hope I don't have to deal with it for a while.
