LOL. You'll love this. One of the old members on here moved from India to the U.S. when she was a young girl. She now works at a help desk station for computers, answering the phone and giving help. She said that a number of times people have called and said, "Oh, thank goodness I didn't get someone in India!" To which she always replies, "No, but I am FROM India!" Her reply is always followed by silence.

I have had the old 'are you from India?' even though I clearly have a Liverpool accent, I think it's cos they hear I have a long unusual name. I do remember though being quite stiff with people who go beyond complaining about our Indian staff into being nasty, cos there is no need for that ignorance. One of the nicest people I've ever met came to study at Liverpool uni which is a red brick and very selective about it's students, and he was very clever. Twice I had customers telling me how he didn't know what he was doing, couldn't speak English properly etc and I'd take them down a peg or two, mostly starting with 'Oh yes he actually works in my centre, studying for his DOCTORATE in business management and practice' which made them quieten down quick, our whole team did that and he would be quite hurt by these customers' comments so hearing us replying like that cheered him up a bit! Our Indian colleagues were always lovely, recruited from graduates or students and had sterling manners. But when you hear that staff are being clamped down on and being sacked by the book instead of being given a chance to improve, that the UK centres are no longer recruiting BUT hey look your company has opened a new 200 strong centre in India, so more people to have communication problems with, it makes my blood boil. I wouldn't mind but we couldn't even pull up the India call recordings to prove what had been said so always ended up siding with the customer and losing a lot of money. But hey that company opened a second, bigger centre and didn't bother to tell us about that one! xx
